2005 Toyota Camry Key Fob Not Working: Troubleshooting Guide

My 2005 Toyota Camry Key Fob recently stopped working entirely. None of the buttons would trigger any response from my car. I’ve tried several common fixes to get it working again, but so far, none have been successful. Here’s a breakdown of what I’ve attempted to resolve this key fob issue.

First, I suspected the most straightforward solution and replaced the key fob battery. Unfortunately, this didn’t solve the problem. To rule out a faulty fob, I even tried using a different key fob with a brand new battery. Still no luck.

Thinking it might be an issue with the car’s receiver, I decided to replace the wireless module receiver (part number 89741-AA020). I sourced a used module from eBay, hoping a replacement would do the trick. After installing the new module, I attempted to reprogram my key fobs in both Add and Rewrite modes, but there was absolutely no response from the car.

To eliminate power supply issues, I checked the dome 7.5A fuse, which is linked to the receiver, and confirmed it was intact. When I reinstalled my original wireless module receiver and tried reprogramming again, I managed to get a response only in Rewrite mode for both key fobs. However, the car signaled a double lock cycle, indicating that the recognition code registration had failed. I repeated this reprogramming process multiple times, consistently getting the same double lock cycle failure.

To ensure the receiver was getting power, I used a multimeter to test the harness wires connected to the module receiver. I verified that I am indeed getting 12V power, which suggests the issue isn’t a simple power supply problem. The eBay seller claimed the replacement module was tested and working, leaving me puzzled about whether there might be another underlying problem with my car.

It’s worth noting that I can still manually lock and unlock the car with the key, and the internal door lock controls work perfectly fine. The problem is isolated to the wireless key fob functionality. I’m wondering if the recent heatwave we experienced could have caused something to malfunction, leading to this key fob failure.

Has anyone else experienced a similar issue with their 2005 Toyota Camry key fob, or have any suggestions on what to investigate next? Any advice on further troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated.
