2009 Honda CRV Key Fob Battery Replacement Guide

Is your 2009 Honda CRV key fob not working reliably? It might be time for a battery replacement. Like any battery, the one in your key fob will eventually lose its charge, even if you have a spare key that isn’t used frequently. Fortunately, replacing the battery in your Honda CRV key fob is a straightforward DIY task that can save you a trip to the dealership and some unnecessary expense.

The battery you’ll need is a CR1616, a 3V lithium battery. While it’s not as common as AA or AAA batteries, you can usually find CR1616 batteries at drug stores like Walgreens or online retailers such as Amazon. You might have less luck at big box hardware stores or general stores like Walmart or CVS, but it’s always worth checking. Prices typically range around $5 per battery, but shopping online could offer you a better deal, especially if you need to replace batteries in multiple key fobs.

Replacing the battery itself is a simple process. You’ll need a small Phillips head screwdriver.

  1. Locate the small screw on the back of your key fob.
  2. Unscrew and remove the screw. Be aware that it might be tight as Honda uses threadlocker. You might need to apply firm pressure while turning to avoid stripping the screw head. Using a padded surface like a terrycloth towel underneath can protect your key fob during this step.
  3. Carefully separate the two halves of the key fob (the bivalves).
  4. Inside, you’ll see a black plastic cassette containing the electronics and the battery. Gently pry open this cassette, which also separates into two halves.
  5. Remove the old CR1616 battery.
  6. Insert the new CR1616 battery. Use a cloth to handle the battery and press it into place, avoiding touching the battery contacts directly. Ensure the positive (+) side of the battery, which has the writing on it, is facing down when you install it, so the writing is not visible once placed in the fob.
  7. Reassemble the cassette and then the key fob halves.
  8. Replace and tighten the screw. Don’t overtighten it.

By following these steps, you can easily replace your 2009 Honda Crv Key Fob Battery yourself. Dealerships often charge around $15 for this simple service, so doing it yourself can save you money and is a quick fix to get your key fob working like new again.
