2010 Honda CRV Key Fob Battery Replacement: A Quick Guide

Is your 2010 Honda Crv Key Fob not working as reliably as it used to? You might be facing a dead battery. Like any battery, the one in your key fob has a limited lifespan, and even if you have a spare key that sits unused, it can still lose power over time. The good news is replacing the battery in your 2010 Honda CRV key fob is a straightforward process you can easily do yourself, saving you a trip to the dealership.

The battery you’ll need is a CR-1616, a 3V lithium battery. While it might not be in every corner store, you can typically find this battery at drugstores like Walgreens or online retailers. Big box stores or regular pharmacies may not always stock this specific type. You can expect to pay around $5 per battery.

Replacing the battery is simple and requires just a small Phillips head screwdriver. First, locate the small screw on your key fob and carefully unscrew it. This will allow you to open the key fob, revealing the internal cassette that houses the electronics and the battery. The cassette itself is also in two halves that you can gently pry open. Inside, you’ll see the battery. Remove the old battery and replace it with the new CR-1616 battery, ensuring the positive (+) side (usually marked with writing) is facing down when you place it in the slot. Using a cloth to handle the battery can help avoid transferring oils to the contact surfaces.

Reassemble the cassette and then the key fob itself, tightening the screw securely but not overly tight. Initially, you might find the screw is a bit stiff due to threadlocker used at the factory. Applying firm and steady pressure while turning the screwdriver will help prevent stripping the screw head. Working on a soft surface like a terrycloth will also protect your key fob from scratches.

While a dealership might charge around $15 to handle this simple battery replacement, doing it yourself is a quick and economical way to get your 2010 Honda CRV key fob working perfectly again.
