2010 Honda CRV Key Fob Battery Replacement Guide

Is your 2010 Honda CRV key fob not working as reliably as it used to? You might be facing a dead battery. Like any battery, the one in your key fob has a limited lifespan, typically lasting a few years. The good news is replacing the battery in your 2010 Honda CRV key fob is a straightforward DIY task that can save you time and money compared to visiting a dealership.

The battery you’ll need is a CR1616 3V lithium battery. These can sometimes be a little harder to find than common batteries, but they are usually available at drug stores like Walgreens, and online retailers. You might find them at larger stores, but smaller drugstores can be a reliable source. Expect to pay around $5 for a replacement battery. Brands like Energizer are a good choice, and you might find versions made in Japan or Mexico.

Replacing the battery is a simple process. You’ll need a mini Phillips head screwdriver. First, locate the small screw on the back of your key fob. Using the screwdriver, carefully remove this screw. It might be a bit tight the first time due to threadlocker, so apply firm, steady pressure while turning to avoid stripping the screw head. Once the screw is out, the key fob case will split open into two halves.

Inside, you’ll see a black plastic inner cassette. Gently pry this open as well, separating it into two pieces. This will reveal the battery. Take note of the battery orientation before removing the old one. Place the new CR1616 battery in the same orientation, ensuring the positive (+) side (usually marked with writing) is facing down when you reassemble it. It’s good practice to use a cloth to handle the battery and avoid touching the flat contact surfaces.

Once the new battery is in place, carefully snap the inner cassette back together, then close the key fob case halves and replace the small screw. Make sure everything is securely closed. That’s it! Your 2010 Honda CRV key fob should now be powered up with a fresh battery. Dealers often charge around $15 or more for this simple service, so doing it yourself is a smart way to save.
