Program Your 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Key Fob: A DIY Guide

Lost your key fob or need a spare for your 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee? Programming a new key fob yourself can save you time and money compared to dealership services. This guide will walk you through the process of programming a new or re-programming an existing key fob for your 2011-2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee or 2011-2013 Dodge Durango using Appcar software.

This method is applicable for:

  • Jeep Grand Cherokee (2011, 2012, 2013 – pre-facelift models)
  • Dodge Durango (2011, 2012, 2013 – pre-facelift models)

Important Considerations Before You Begin:

  • New or Reprogrammed Key Fobs: This procedure works for programming a new, unprogrammed key fob or re-programming a key fob that was previously programmed to your vehicle.
  • Used Key Fobs: Programming a used key fob from another vehicle is not possible without specialized locksmith tools to erase its previous programming.
  • Required Tool: You will need the Appcar DiagFCA software and an OBDII diagnostic interface to communicate with your vehicle’s computer system.

Step-by-Step Guide to Program Your 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Key Fob

Follow these steps carefully to program your key fob:

Step 1: Vehicle Preparation

Insert your new key fob into the ignition switch and turn it to the RUN position. For vehicles equipped with Keyless Enter-N-Go, you’ll first need to remove the Engine START/STOP button. After removing the button, insert the key fob into the ignition and turn it to the RUN position. The vehicle’s Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) should display the message ‘Key Not Programmed’.

Step 2: Read PIN Code Using Appcar DiagFCA

Connect your OBDII interface to your vehicle and launch the Appcar DiagFCA software on your computer or compatible device. Establish a connection with your vehicle. Navigate to the Diagnostic section, then WCM (Wireless Control Module), and select Routines. Run the routine labeled ‘Read PIN Code’. This routine will retrieve the necessary PIN code required for key fob programming. Make sure to note down the PIN code, as you will need it in the next step.

Step 3: Program Ignition Keys or Key FOBs Routine

In the Appcar DiagFCA software, return to the Routines menu within the WCM module. This time, select and run the routine ‘Program Ignition Keys or Key FOBs’.

The software will first display the number of key fobs currently programmed to your Jeep Grand Cherokee. You can typically program up to a maximum of 8 key fobs.

Next, the software will prompt you to enter the 4-digit PIN code that you retrieved in Step 2. Enter the PIN code accurately.

Once you enter the PIN code, the ignition module will initiate the key fob programming procedure. This process may take a few moments. Allow the procedure to complete without interruption.

After the programming is complete, the software will display the result, indicating whether the programming was successful. It will also show the updated number of programmed key fobs, which should be one more than before if you successfully added a new key fob.

Step 4: PEM Replace Routine for Keyless Go (If Applicable)

If your 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee is equipped with Keyless Go and your new key fob supports this feature (note that some aftermarket or cheaper replacement fobs may not fully support Keyless Go), you need to run the ‘PEM Replace’ routine. This routine is located in the Diagnostic section, then PEM (Passive Entry Module), and finally Routines within the Appcar DiagFCA software. This step ensures that the Keyless Go functionality is properly synced with your new key fob.

Troubleshooting Common Key Fob Programming Issues

If you encounter issues during the programming process, consider these common causes:

  • Incorrect Key Fob Type: Ensure you are using the correct type of key fob for your 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Key fobs that look similar may not be compatible.
  • Used Key Fob from Another Vehicle: As mentioned earlier, used key fobs programmed to other vehicles cannot be programmed to yours without special unlocking procedures.
  • Maximum Key Fob Limit Reached: If you have already programmed the maximum number of key fobs (typically 8), you will need to erase an existing key fob before programming a new one.
  • Key Fob Battery Voltage: Check the battery voltage of your new key fob. Voltage that is too low or too high can sometimes prevent successful programming. The ideal voltage should be around 3.3 Volts.

By following these steps, you should be able to successfully program a new key fob for your 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Remember to double-check compatibility and ensure you have the necessary Appcar DiagFCA software and OBDII interface for a smooth programming experience.
