2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Key Fob Not Detected: Troubleshooting and Concerns

Experiencing a “key fob not detected” issue with your 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee can be frustrating, and I recently encountered this exact problem. Initially, following advice from a dealer, I attempted to touch the key fob to the start/stop button, hoping for a quick fix. Unfortunately, this method proved unsuccessful. I even tried prying off the start/stop button cap, based on another dealer’s suggestion, mistakenly believing there was a backup key ignition behind it – a feature absent in the 2015 models and likely the 2014 as well. This led to some unnecessary tampering with my ignition system.

My Jeep had to be towed to a dealership, and even they initially struggled to start the vehicle. Adding to the inconvenience, the car is currently stuck in Nevada awaiting parts, while I am miles away in Arizona. This whole ordeal has led me to consider potential causes, such as a simple computer malfunction or perhaps RF interference. I’ve learned that key fobs operate on frequencies like 315Mhz and 434mHz, and some sources suggest the 315Mhz frequency can be susceptible to jamming from other devices.

What’s particularly concerning is that online research reveals numerous reports of this “key fob not detected” issue in 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Chargers. My incident occurred not long after driving on a remote backcountry road, highlighting a significant worry: a complete system failure in such a location could necessitate an expensive and complicated vehicle recovery. It seems modern automotive technology might be outpacing the training of many mechanics, often leading to module replacements as the default solution, rather than addressing potential underlying software bugs. Furthermore, for vehicles marketed for their “go-anywhere” capability, the absence of a mechanical backup starting method feels like a critical oversight, leaving drivers stranded when electronic systems fail.
