2017 Chevrolet Malibu Key Fob Programming: A Comprehensive Guide

Losing or needing to replace your 2017 Chevrolet Malibu Key Fob can be a hassle, but programming a new one doesn’t have to be. This guide provides step-by-step instructions to program your key fob, whether you have existing recognized transmitters or not. Follow these methods to get back on the road quickly and securely.

Programming Your 2017 Chevy Malibu Key Fob with Recognized Transmitters

This method is applicable only to Keyless Access vehicles and requires you to have at least two working, recognized key fobs. Ensure you have all your key fobs – both the recognized ones and the new one – with you before starting the process.

  1. Prepare the Recognized Keys: Begin by placing your two currently recognized key fobs into the front cup holder of your Chevrolet Malibu.

  2. Initiate Programming Sequence: Locate the key lock cylinder cap on your driver’s side door handle and remove it. Take the vehicle key from your new key fob and insert it into the exposed key lock cylinder. Turn the key to the unlock position five times in rapid succession, within a 10-second timeframe.

  3. Observe the Driver Information Center (DIC): After correctly performing step 2, the Driver Information Center (DIC) located on your dashboard will display the message “READY FOR REMOTE #2, 3, 4 or 5 etc.” This indicates the vehicle has entered programming mode and is ready to learn a new key fob.

  4. Place the New Transmitter: Take your new key fob transmitter and place it into the transmitter pocket. This pocket is located inside the center console storage area of your Malibu. Ensure the buttons on the key fob are facing towards the rear of the vehicle when placing it in the pocket.

  5. Program the New Transmitter: Press the ENGINE START/STOP button in your vehicle. Once the new transmitter is successfully programmed, the DIC will display a message indicating it’s ready for the next remote to be programmed.

  6. Finalize and Exit Programming Mode: Remove the newly programmed key fob from the transmitter pocket. Press either the UNLOCK or LOCK button on the key fob to confirm programming. If you have additional key fobs to program, repeat steps 3 through 5. Once you have programmed all desired key fobs, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for approximately 12 seconds to exit the key fob programming mode.

  7. Return the Key: Finally, remember to return the vehicle key back into the new key fob transmitter.

Programming Your 2017 Chevy Malibu Key Fob Without Recognized Transmitters

If you don’t have two recognized key fobs available, or if you’ve lost all your existing fobs, you can still program new ones using this procedure. Important Note: This method is not available in Canada and will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Ensure you have all the new key fobs you wish to program with you before you begin.

  1. Start the Learning Process: Remove the key lock cylinder cap on the driver’s door handle. Insert the vehicle key from your new transmitter into the key lock cylinder on the outside of the driver’s door. Turn the key to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds. The Driver Information Center (DIC) will display “REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.”

  2. First 10-Minute Wait: Wait for a full 10 minutes. The DIC display will change to “PRESS ENGINE START BUTTON TO LEARN.” Once you see this message, proceed to the next step.

  3. Press Engine Start/Stop and Subsequent Waits: Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. The DIC display will revert back to “REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.” You must now repeat Step 2 two additional times. This means waiting for another 10 minutes, pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button, and then waiting a final 10 minutes. After the third 10-minute period, all previously programmed key fobs will be cleared from the vehicle’s memory.

  4. Ready to Program New Remote: After the series of waits, the DIC display should now show “READY FOR REMOTE # 1.” This indicates the system is ready to learn your new key fobs.

  5. Place the New Transmitter: Place the new key fob transmitter into the transmitter pocket located inside the center console storage area, ensuring the buttons are facing the rear of the vehicle.

  6. Program the New Transmitter: Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. When the transmitter is successfully learned, the DIC will indicate it’s ready for the next remote to be programmed.

  7. Finalize and Exit Programming Mode: Remove the programmed key fob from the transmitter pocket and press the UNLOCK or LOCK button on the fob. To program additional key fobs, repeat steps 5 and 6. After programming all desired key fobs, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for 12 seconds to exit programming mode.

  8. Return the Key: Return the vehicle key back into the transmitter.

By following these instructions, you should be able to program your 2017 Chevrolet Malibu key fob successfully. If you encounter any issues or the programming fails, it’s recommended to consult your Chevrolet dealership for assistance.
