2023 Toyota 4Runner Key Fob Programming: A Step-by-Step Guide

Lost your 2023 Toyota 4Runner key fob or need to program a new one? No need to visit a dealership! This guide provides simple, step-by-step instructions for programming your 2023 4Runner key fob yourself.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Vehicle Preparation

Ensure your 2023 4Runner is ready for programming by turning the ignition OFF and opening the driver’s side door and leaving it UNLOCKED.

Step 2: Initiate Programming Mode – Part 1

Insert your key into the ignition cylinder, and then immediately remove it. Do not turn the key at any point during this step.

Step 3: Initiate Programming Mode – Part 2

Within 40 seconds of completing Step 2, you need to perform the following actions:

a. Use the power door lock switch located on the driver’s side door. Cycle the lock and unlock function 5 times, beginning with the LOCK action. Maintain a consistent pace, aiming for approximately one lock/unlock cycle per second. (One cycle consists of one lock and one unlock).

b. Close the driver’s side door, and then open it again.

Step 4: Initiate Programming Mode – Part 3

Within 40 seconds of completing Step 3, execute the following sequence:

a. Again, using the power door lock switch on the driver’s door, perform 5 lock/unlock cycles, starting with the lock function. Keep a steady rhythm of about one cycle per second (1 Cycle = 1 lock and 1 unlock).

b. Insert the key back into the ignition cylinder.

c. Turn the ignition to the ON position (Do NOT start the engine) and then immediately turn it back to the OFF position.

  • Perform this ignition cycle ONCE if you intend to retain any previously programmed remotes and add a new remote.
  • Perform this ignition cycle TWICE if you want to erase all existing remotes and program only the new remote(s).
  • Perform this ignition cycle THREE times to check the number of remotes currently programmed to your vehicle.
  • Perform this ignition cycle FIVE times to erase all existing remotes.

d. Remove the key from the ignition.

Step 5: Programming Mode Confirmation

Within 3 seconds after removing the key in Step 4d, the power door locks should automatically cycle LOCK and UNLOCK. This lock cycle indicates that your 4Runner has successfully entered Programming Mode.

Step 6: Remote Programming

Within 40 seconds of entering Programming Mode, program your remote by following these steps:

a. Press and hold both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1 second.

b. Immediately after releasing both buttons, press and HOLD the LOCK button for 2 seconds. If the programming is successful, the door locks will cycle LOCK and UNLOCK again to confirm the remote has been programmed.

Step 7: Programming Additional Remotes

If you have additional remotes to program, repeat steps 6a and 6b for each additional remote.

Step 8: Exit Programming Mode

To exit the key fob programming mode, simply close the driver’s side door.

Step 9: Test Remotes

Thoroughly test all programmed remotes to ensure they are functioning correctly. Programming is now complete.
