Jeep Key Fob Battery Change? Try This Trick If It’s Not Working

Changing the battery in your Jeep key fob should be a straightforward task, right? You swap out the old battery for a new one, and you’re good to go. However, some Jeep owners, like myself, have encountered a frustrating issue: after a battery change, the key fob just won’t work. I went through seven different batteries, both new and used, with no luck. Each time I put the old, failing battery back in, the fob would work again. It was baffling until I stumbled upon a solution that might help you too.

The fix, at least for my Jeep, was surprisingly simple. I tried the fob-on-start-button method, the same procedure you’d use when your key fob battery is completely dead. I went to my vehicle and started it by pressing the key fob directly against the start button. After doing this, all the key fob functions returned to normal. Suddenly, the new battery was working perfectly!

This experience leads me to suspect that there’s an undocumented process or memory function, either in the Jeep or the key fob itself, that monitors battery levels. When you replace the battery, it seems this system might not immediately recognize the new power level. It’s almost as if the system needs a reset, and using the fob-on-start-button method achieves just that. Interestingly, even the Jeep dealership staff didn’t seem to be officially aware of this trick.

When I contacted the dealer, they offered to sell me a new key fob, a new battery at an inflated price, or a fob reprogramming service – none of which were covered under warranty. It felt like a classic case of trying to upsell unnecessary services instead of offering a simple solution. It’s disappointing to see this approach becoming more common across manufacturers, even for basic maintenance tasks that owners should be able to handle themselves. My previous Chrysler vehicles never presented such issues with key fob batteries. In fact, the battery in my 2002 Chrysler fob lasted around 8 years, while the Jeep fob batteries seem to last only 1-2 years. While my older Chrysler didn’t have remote start, I used its fob for locking and unlocking regularly, something I avoid doing often with my Jeep to conserve battery.

If you’re facing issues after a Battery Change Jeep Key Fob, before you consider expensive dealer services, try the fob-on-start-button method. It might just be the simple solution to get your Jeep key fob battery change working correctly. You might be surprised at how effective this undocumented trick can be for your Jeep key fob battery replacement.
