DIY Guide to Repairing Your Camaro Key Fob

Is your Camaro Key Fob acting up? Maybe the buttons are sticking, the flip mechanism is loose, or the shell is damaged. Before you rush to a dealership and spend a fortune on a replacement, you might be surprised to learn that fixing it yourself is easier than you think. This guide will walk you through disassembling and reassembling your Camaro key fob, allowing you to repair common issues or replace the shell without needing to reprogram a new key.

This simple repair can save you time and money. All you’ll need is a small screwdriver and a few minutes. Let’s get started!

First, we need to disassemble the Camaro key fob.

To begin, remove the battery cover and the battery. With the key flipped open, place your thumb in the space where the key sits and pop the battery cover off. Then, simply slide the battery out.

Next, carefully pry open the key fob shell. Using a small flathead screwdriver, gently pry at the top side of the key fob. In some cases, like mine which was already starting to come apart, this might be quite easy.

Then, repeat the prying action on the backside of the key fob, near the metal keyring holder. This time, proceed more slowly and gently to ease the two halves apart. You might find it helpful to hold the plastic part and push against the metal ring holder to separate them.

As the front face detaches completely from the back face, it might spin a couple of times due to the spring mechanism inside. Don’t worry, this is normal.

Now you can remove the physical key blade and the internal circuit board chip from the Camaro key fob.

Now that we’ve disassembled the Camaro key fob, let’s move on to reassembly. While it might seem like simply reversing the disassembly process, there’s a small trick to setting up the spring mechanism correctly.

Here’s how to reassemble your Camaro key fob:

  1. If you removed the push button from the key blade, place it back onto the key.
  2. Position the circuit board chip back into the front half of the shell, ensuring it faces downwards.
  3. Place the key blade back into its slot in the “out” or open position.
  4. Now, carefully place the spring back into the push button. It should seat securely in a locked position.

Next, position the back face of the key fob onto the spring, making sure the small “foot” of the spring aligns with its designated slot on the back face. This “foot” is crucial for the flip mechanism to work correctly.

Hold the key fob like this, with the back face ready to be attached.

Now, rotate the back face in a counterclockwise direction. This action will wind the spring and create the outward spring force for the flip key. Rotate it for two full revolutions and then snap the back face firmly onto the front face.

The rest is straightforward. Simply press the two halves of the Camaro key fob shell together firmly until they click into place. Finger pressure should be sufficient.

By following these steps, you can disassemble and reassemble your Camaro key fob in about 5 minutes. Sometimes, simply taking it apart and putting it back together can improve the fit and eliminate looseness.

If you find that your Camaro key fob shell is too damaged to repair, you can purchase replacement shells online. This allows you to transfer the internal components from your old key fob into a new shell, avoiding the cost of a completely new, programmed key from the dealership.

Here are a few places where you can find uncut, unprogrammed key fobs for shell replacement:

Repairing your Camaro key fob yourself is a simple way to save money and avoid unnecessary dealership costs. Whether you’re fixing loose buttons, a sticky flip mechanism, or replacing a damaged shell, this DIY guide provides the steps you need to get your Camaro key fob working like new again.
