For BMW enthusiasts, the allure of a true M car is undeniable. After a period of considering various options, including the coveted M2 CS, I found myself drawn to the compelling package offered by the 2021 Bmw M2 Competition. The M2 Competition stands out as a potent and engaging machine, and securing an allocation from my trusted dealer marked the beginning of an exciting journey.
Built in June, my M2 Competition is currently en route to the Ventura VPC, anticipating a July arrival. The port will be busy installing a selection of performance enhancements, adding to the anticipation. My history with BMW stretches back 47 years, filled with memorable cars. My E30 M3 holds a special place, closely followed by the E46 M3. More recently, a 2019 X4 M40i served its purpose, offering a taste of BMW performance in a larger, heavier form factor.
The desire for a more focused, “true” M car experience led me directly to the 2021 BMW M2 Competition. While I briefly considered the new G80 M3, it didn’t resonate with my personal concept of an M sport vehicle. The G80’s design direction and advanced technology felt like a departure, perhaps even “too much” for my taste. I appreciate the raw, visceral feel of the M2 Competition, aligning more closely with the classic M car spirit.
This new 2021 BMW M2 Competition will serve as my spirited daily driver, ready for weekend adventures on winding roads and potentially some track time down the line. It will join our garage alongside a 2002 BMW E36/7 M Roadster (S54) and a 2021 i3s REX, creating a diverse BMW family.
My specific order for the 2021 BMW M2 Competition includes:
- Alpine White exterior
- 19-inch M Y-Spoke forged black wheels
- Black Dakota Leather with Blue Stitching
- Carbon Fiber Interior Trim
- Executive Package
Furthermore, I opted for a range of BMW Performance parts to enhance the 2021 BMW M2 Competition from the outset:
- Performance Drive Analyzer (0ZGX)
- Carbon Fiber Rear Spoiler (0Z09)
- Carbon Fiber Interior Trim (OZ18)
- Carbon Fiber & Alcantara Trim (0Z2Q)
- Carbon Fiber Rear Diffuser (OZ4G)
- Carbon Fiber Exhaust Tips (OZ6M)
- Carbon Fiber Side Skirt Winglets (OZ02)
- Carbon Fiber Mirror Caps (OZ21)
- Carbon Fiber Front Splitter (0ZP7)
- Carbon Fiber Side Grills (0ZW1)
In considering upgrades for the 2021 BMW M2 Competition, I’ve been researching comparisons to a stock M2 CS. An insightful article from BMW Blog (https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/05/01/how-to-make-a-bmw-m2-competition-as-close-as-possible-to-an-m2-cs/) served as a valuable starting point. The M Performance 2-way coil-overs are tempting, but I’m weighing the benefits against potential shorter lifespan and warranty considerations, especially for a daily driver. Many reviews highlight the M2 CS suspension as a key differentiator.
Wheel options are also on my mind. While the standard 788M forged wheels are functional and well-suited to the 2021 BMW M2 Competition, the 763M wheels are visually more appealing to me. Changing wheels would be purely for aesthetics. If I were to switch to 763Ms, Michelin Cup 2 tires would likely be part of the upgrade. Selling the factory 788M wheel and tire set could offset some of the cost. Finding the right wheel and tire combination within a reasonable budget is the current focus.
This marks the beginning of my journey with the 2021 BMW M2 Competition. I’m eager to connect with fellow BMW enthusiasts, particularly M2 Competition and M2 CS owners in Southern California. Recommendations for reputable shops specializing in BMW suspension, alignment, and aftermarket modifications are highly appreciated. Any insights on the upgrade considerations mentioned above would also be invaluable. Thank you for joining me as I embark on this exciting BMW chapter!
