Type S Turbo V6: A Deep Dive
The heart of the 2021 TLX Type S is undoubtedly the Type S Turbo V6, a completely new 24-valve, DOHC 3.0-liter V6 engine featuring direct-injection and a single twin-scroll turbocharger. This engine, exclusive to Type S models, is the result of collaboration among Acura’s most experienced powertrain engineers, including members who contributed to the Civic Type R engine and the NSX’s hybrid powertrain. Drawing on expertise from the current 3.5-liter V6, the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, and the NSX engine, the Type S Turbo V6 produces its impressive 355 horsepower and 354 lb.-ft. of torque.
To manage the increased torque output, the 10-speed automatic transmission has been strengthened and programmed for quicker shifts. The fourth-generation Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) system with torque vectoring is standard, optimized for the performance demands of Type S drivers.
The Type S Turbo V6 boasts all-aluminum construction and compact dimensions. While sharing bore spacing and a 60-degree architecture with the 3.5-liter V6 found in the MDX, the 3.0-liter engine features unique elements like 6-bolt sintered main caps for enhanced crankshaft rigidity and durability, and a square 86 mm bore and stroke configuration. The compact design is achieved through strategic placement of the turbocharger and low-profile cylinder heads, resulting in an engine that is even shorter than the naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6.
The twin-scroll turbocharger enhances responsiveness by utilizing separate internal paths for the front and rear cylinder banks. This design allows peak torque to be available from a remarkably low 1,400 rpm.
To minimize emissions, advanced heat management technology is employed to quickly activate the catalytic converter. This includes a double-pipe exhaust manifold design with external bellows for heat dissipation and a V-band connection to the catalytic converter, a first for Acura engines. An additional sub-radiator and the open-surface Diamond Pentagon grille improve engine cooling by increasing airflow by 10 percent.
Durability under extreme performance conditions is ensured through a robust rotating assembly, featuring a high-strength forged steel crankshaft, similar to the NSX’s twin-turbo V6, and forged steel connecting rods derived from Acura’s 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Unique piston design includes a high-density Ni-resist cast iron top piston ring carrier for improved wear and sealing, further reducing emissions.

Innovative Cylinder Head and VCM™
The low hood line of the TLX Type S necessitated a low-profile engine design. Engineers achieved this by integrating the cam bearing caps directly into the valve cover, reducing engine height and the number of parts.
A key objective for the Type S Turbo V6 was the implementation of Variable Cylinder Management™ (VCM™) to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. VCM™ allows the engine to operate on three cylinders under light loads, seamlessly transitioning to six-cylinder mode when more power is demanded. A newly developed mechanism within the DOHC cylinder heads enables VCM™ by using a compact rocker arm and hydraulic lash adjuster design to deactivate valves when needed, improving fuel economy without sacrificing performance.
Active Vibration Control and Exhaust
To ensure smooth operation during VCM™ activation, the TLX Type S utilizes new engine mounts and Active Vibration Control (AVC). AVC uses sensors to detect and counteract vibrations from both the engine and chassis, making VCM™ operation nearly imperceptible. AVC tuning is also adjusted within the Integrated Dynamic Modes to modulate engine sound.
The Active Exhaust system, adapted from the NSX, further enhances the auditory experience. Butterfly valves in each muffler open to amplify the V6 engine’s natural sound, increasing exhaust volume by 5-7 decibels when fully opened. The system is dynamically controlled by the Integrated Dynamics System, with valve operation varying across Comfort, Normal, Sport, and Sport+ modes to tailor the exhaust note to the driving situation.
High-Performance 10-Speed Automatic Transmission and SH-AWD®
The Type S Turbo V6 is paired exclusively with an enhanced 10-speed automatic transmission, fortified to handle the engine’s significant torque and power. Upgrades include a new torque converter, stronger internal gears and clutches, and a Type S-exclusive transmission cooler. The transmission offers both fully automatic operation and manual shifting via steering wheel-mounted paddles, with Type S-specific programming for quicker downshifts and upshifts, especially in Sport+ mode.
Standard on the TLX Type S is the fourth generation of Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®). This system is a first for a Type S model and distributes torque dynamically between the front and rear axles, and also between the left and right rear wheels, optimizing handling in diverse conditions. The rear differential has been enhanced for the Type S, increasing rear axle torque capacity by 40 percent and delivering torque to the rear wheels 30 percent faster than previous generations. Up to 70 percent of torque can be directed to the rear axle, with 100 percent of that rear torque capable of being sent to either rear wheel for superior cornering agility.
