Porsche has unveiled the new 911 Sport Classic, a limited-edition model that masterfully blends retro aesthetics with modern engineering. Limited to just 1,250 units, this stunning vehicle is a direct homage to the iconic 911s of the 1960s and early 1970s, and particularly the 1972 911 Carrera RS 2.7. Following in the footsteps of its 997-generation predecessor from 2009, the latest 911 Sport Classic is the second in Porsche’s Heritage Design series, offering a nostalgic journey for enthusiasts and collectors alike.
Alexander Fabig, Vice President Individualization and Classic at Porsche, describes the Heritage Design models as “the most emotionally driven concepts” within Porsche’s product strategy. This philosophy is evident in the 911 Sport Classic, where the Style Porsche design department and Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur have collaborated to revive design elements from the 1950s to 1980s. This approach is part of Porsche’s broader plan to release four limited-edition Heritage Design models, with the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition, inspired by the 50s and 60s, being the first in 2020.
Owners of the 911 Sport Classic are also offered the chance to purchase an exclusive, high-quality chronograph from Porsche Design. This timepiece mirrors design details from the car itself, further enhancing the ownership experience. Moreover, the Heritage Design Classic package extends the retro feel to current 911 models, allowing owners to incorporate selected interior elements from the Sport Classic into their existing vehicles.
The 911 Sport Classic immediately stands out with its wide body, typically reserved for the 911 Turbo models, lending it a muscular stance. Adding to its visual appeal are the fixed rear spoiler, reminiscent of the legendary ‘ducktail’ Carrera RS 2.7, and the distinctive double-bubble roof. These elements combine to create a unique and instantly recognizable silhouette.
Drawing inspiration from the Fashion Grey paintwork of the early Porsche 356, the new Sport Classic debuts the stunning Sport Grey Metallic finish. Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche, describes grey as “never boring, quite often a statement and always cool,” highlighting the sophisticated and timeless appeal of this exclusive color. Beyond Sport Grey Metallic, the 911 Sport Classic is also available in solid Black, Agate Grey Metallic, Gentian Blue Metallic, or through Porsche’s Paint to Sample program for further personalization. Light Sports Grey twin stripes adorn the bonnet, roof, and rear spoiler, further accentuating the car’s sporty character.
Inside the cabin, the retro theme continues with the iconic Pepita pattern adorning the door panels and seat centers. Two-tone, semi-aniline leather upholstery in Black and Classic Cognac provides a luxurious and elegant contrast to the exterior paint, creating a harmonious and inviting interior space.
The Most Powerful Manual 911 Available Today
Powering the 911 Sport Classic is a 3.7-liter, twin-turbo flat-six engine, delivering a potent 550 PS (405 kW) exclusively to the rear wheels. This makes it the most powerful manual 911 currently available, appealing to purists who crave driver engagement. The seven-speed manual gearbox features an auto-blip function, ensuring smooth downshifts by automatically adjusting engine speed. A standard sports exhaust system further enriches the driving experience with a more emotive and pronounced sound.
The suspension system, derived from the 911 Turbo and 911 GTS, is engineered to meet demanding performance standards. Standard Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) allows the shock absorbers to react instantaneously to changing driving dynamics. This system is paired with a sports suspension that lowers the ride height by 10 millimeters, enhancing both handling and visual appeal.
The 911 Sport Classic is more than just a car; it’s a celebration of Porsche’s rich heritage, reimagined for the modern era. With its limited availability and unique combination of classic design cues and exhilarating performance, the 911 Sport Classic is poised to become a highly sought-after collector’s item, embodying the timeless appeal of the Porsche 911.
