My journey with the Porsche 911 began with a black 964 Cabriolet, a chance encounter that ignited a lifelong passion. As a seventeen-year-old, the sight of that “For Sale” sign was irresistible. Summoning teenage audacity, I persuaded the owner for a test drive and, fueled by youthful dreams, cruised towards my high school, hoping to impress. While romance eluded me that day, something far more profound blossomed: an undeniable love for the 911. The failed attempts at flirtation faded as I drove, replaced by an intense focus on the car itself. Feeling the road’s texture through the steering wheel, pedals, and seat; the effortless cornering; and the raw power of the flat-six engine – it was an awakening. That drive etched a desire into my mind: to spend my life experiencing the world from behind those iconic headlights.
That 964 was just the beginning. Two decades later, I’ve been fortunate to experience a wide spectrum of 911s, from well-loved, high-mileage 993s to the breathtaking artistry of Singer Vehicle Design restorations and the track-focused brilliance of Gunther Werks creations. I’ve driven everything from base Carreras to the sheer exhilaration of Turbo S Lightweights. Each encounter reinforced the same truth: every 911 is a car to be desired. The only limiting factor, realistically, is the lottery jackpot.
This personal history is crucial because the 2024 Porsche 911 S/T, celebrating 60 years of the 911 legacy, demands to be understood in context. This isn’t a car designed solely for track records or blistering acceleration figures. The 911 St is crafted for the pure joy of driving, a testament to the love of the automobile itself. It’s a 911 for those who truly understand and cherish the marque – individuals likely to already possess a collection, yet are willing to invest significantly for another exceptional example.
Perhaps not quite in my budget yet, but the dream of the 911 ST, like every 911 before it, continues to fuel the passion.
