Aston Martin Vantage: A Modern British Sports Car Icon

Okay, let’s get straight to the point: I’m a confessed Aston Martin enthusiast. Having owned three myself, my perspective might be a tad biased. However, the new Aston Martin Vantage is in a league of its own, distinct even from my previous Vantage V-12 S. Aston Martin has truly redefined what the Vantage badge represents, crafting a refined sports-touring car that’s anything but subtle. Its standard exhaust note is a bold announcement of arrival, and a thrilling roar on departure. Think less classic Sean Connery, and more the assertive Daniel Craig in its demeanor.

Let’s delve into the specifics. My test Vantage, for a week, was coated in “Yellow Tang,” a shade so vibrant it seemed to attract bees – and yes, it genuinely did. The black metallic and leather interior created a striking contrast. The “Twill Gloss Carbon Fibre” interior trim amplified the visual drama, perfectly complemented by yellow brake calipers peeking from behind the 20-inch, gloss black diamond-turned wheels. Visually, this car is captivating.

But the allure of the Aston Martin Vantage extends beyond mere aesthetics. Ignition brings the beast to life – and possibly alerts the neighborhood, depending on your departure hour. Aston Martin understands the visceral pleasure of a powerful engine’s sound, enriching the driving experience for both the person behind the wheel and any discerning car enthusiast who appreciates a truly untamed engine. With an abundance of crackles and pops, the Vantage boasts, in my opinion, one of the most exhilarating exhaust notes available today. This Am Vantage point is crucial for anyone seeking a truly engaging driving experience.

Stepping inside the Vantage, the opulence continues. Premium leathers, optional aluminum tread plates, ventilated seats, and the aforementioned carbon fiber trim create a luxurious environment. Opt for the “Premium Audio” system, and when you desire a break from the engine’s symphony, you’re treated to exceptional sound quality, amplified by the intimate cabin space. It’s akin to driving a very fast pair of high-end headphones.

The performance of the Aston Martin Vantage is equally breathtaking. A 503 HP twin-turbo V-8 engine delivering 505 lb-ft of torque propels this 3,373-pound machine from 0-60 mph in a mere 3.6 seconds, reaching a top speed of 195 mph. However, what truly distinguishes the V8 Vantage from its V-12 Vantage AMR sibling is its 50/50 weight distribution. This perfect balance, distributing weight equally over the front and rear axles, promises superior cornering agility. While I didn’t have the opportunity for track time with this particular Vantage, my past experiences with earlier V8 Vantages on the track have been nothing short of impressive. There’s even a classic publicity shot capturing a Vantage momentarily airborne over a crest, perfectly level, showcasing its balanced dynamics.

Currently, the Vantage holds the position of Aston Martin’s most accessible model, even compared to the DBX SUV (which starts at $176,900 and is slated for a future review). With a base price of $147,000 (the coupe starting around $8,000 less), my Vantage convertible test model was equipped with special paint, painted brake calipers, carbon fiber accents throughout, stunning 20-inch wheels, the upgraded sound system, and more, all contributing to the final price. The sticker for my Vantage Roadster totaled just under $204,000.

Unsurprisingly, as a devoted Aston Martin admirer, my week with this roadster was pure delight. The convertible top operated effortlessly, and the car’s aesthetics and sound were simply outstanding. If you’re in the market for a luxurious, two-seater convertible that excels both in city driving and on extended road trips, an Aston Martin Vantage might very well be your next car. It truly embodies a modern am vantage in the sports car world.

Your car, Mr. Bond.
