Battery for 2012 Nissan Maxima Key Fob: Simple Replacement Guide

Is your 2012 Nissan Maxima key fob not working as reliably as it used to? A common culprit is a low battery. Fortunately, replacing the battery in your key fob is a straightforward process you can easily do yourself. This guide will walk you through identifying the correct battery and replacing it, saving you a trip to the dealership.

The battery you’ll need for your 2012 Nissan Maxima key fob is a CR2032 3-volt lithium coin cell battery. You might also see this battery listed under designations like DL2032 or ECR2032, but they are all the same and interchangeable. These batteries are widely available and can be purchased at most retailers that sell batteries, including stores like Walmart, Radio Shack, and any electronics store.

To begin the replacement, first locate and remove the mechanical key from your key fob by sliding the small release latch. Once the key is removed, you’ll notice small slots on the side of the fob where the key was. Insert a small screwdriver into one of these slots. Gently twist the screwdriver to pry the fob open. Take care to avoid touching any of the internal electronic components.

With the fob open, you can now access the battery. Remove the old battery and install the new CR2032 battery. Ensure you place the new battery face down. This means the side of the battery with the writing will be facing down, hidden from view, and the blank side of the battery will be visible when you look into the battery compartment.

After inserting the new battery, carefully snap the key fob back together until it’s securely closed. Your key fob should now be powered by the new battery and function correctly.

In most cases, replacing the battery will solve the issue of a weak or non-responsive key fob. However, if you find that both of your key fobs are suddenly showing low battery warnings and the batteries are relatively new, there could be a different problem. It’s possible that an antenna issue within your Nissan Maxima’s intelligent key system is causing excessive battery drain. Diagnosing and repairing such an issue requires specialized knowledge, and it’s best to consult a qualified and experienced automotive service technician in such instances.
