The electric vehicle (EV) market is rapidly evolving, and BMW is making significant strides with its all-electric offerings. While high-performance variants often grab headlines, sometimes the less powerful, more accessible models offer the most compelling package. This holds true for the BMW i4 eDrive40, the single-motor version of BMW’s sleek electric fastback sedan. After spending time behind the wheel, it’s clear why this model stands out as one of the best electric sedans available today.
Having previously experienced the exhilarating power of the BMW i4 M50, the focus shifted to the i4 eDrive40. While the M50 is undeniably impressive with its blistering speed and all-wheel drive, the i4 eDrive40 presents a more balanced and arguably more appealing proposition for many drivers. Starting at a more accessible price point of $57,300, the i4 eDrive40 undercuts the dual-motor M50 by a significant margin, offering over 30 miles more range on a single charge from the same 84.3 kWh battery pack. This translates to an EPA-estimated range of 301 miles, making it a practical choice for both daily commutes and longer journeys.
BMW’s reputation was built on crafting driver-focused, rear-wheel-drive sedans. The i4 eDrive40 stays true to this heritage. The absence of a front motor not only reduces weight over the front axle but also allows the front wheels to focus solely on steering and braking, enhancing agility and handling. Furthermore, less power demand can translate to smaller wheels, potentially improving ride comfort and extending range. While our test vehicle was equipped with optional 19-inch wheels (a $600 upgrade), which slightly reduced the range to 283 miles, the standard 18-inch wheels would further optimize efficiency.
BMW i4 interior in cognac
Stepping inside the BMW i4 eDrive40 reveals a cabin that blends modern technology with BMW’s signature design language. The aero-optimized recessed door handles open to a welcoming interior. The test car featured tan-colored seats upholstered in Sensatec, BMW’s high-quality synthetic fabric, which is standard and available in several shades, offering a premium feel even without opting for leather. The steering wheel rim is noticeably thinner than in many contemporary BMW models, and thankfully, the multifunction controls are physical buttons, a welcome departure from overly complex touch-sensitive interfaces.
The i4 eDrive40 shares its ergonomic layout with the higher-performance M50 variant, dominated by a large, seamless dual-screen display powered by BMW iDrive 8.5. This expansive screen stretches from the driver’s side A-pillar to the center of the dashboard, providing a wealth of information and control at your fingertips. Notably, the i4 might be among the last BMW models to retain a physical scroll wheel as an input method alongside the touchscreen and voice commands. This traditional control interface offers a tactile and intuitive way to navigate the system, a feature that many drivers still appreciate.
