BMW M3 CS: A Long-Term Ownership Review – Daily Driving and Track Performance

Featured on BIMMERPOST.com

The Bmw M3 Cs, serving as my sole vehicle and multi-purpose machine, has now clocked 8,900 miles, including approximately 500 track miles. This review shares my experiences and insights into how this exceptional car holds up to a diverse range of uses. While my comments are primarily focused on the CS variant, many observations will resonate with owners of all BMW M3 models. Spoiler alert: The M3 CS has been outstanding, surpassing all initial expectations.

Ownership Experience: The Versatile BMW M3 CS

Living with the M3 CS has been remarkably easy throughout all seasons. It’s a thrill to drive whether navigating city streets, enjoying winding back roads, or pushing limits on the track. This car seamlessly handles everyday tasks, from grocery runs and passenger transport to business engagements and personal trips. Importantly, the car has been faultless – no rattles or unwelcome noises have emerged within the cabin, even after considerable mileage. In heavy traffic, the integrated technology proves invaluable, easing the frustration of stop-and-go conditions.

The M3 CS offers a unique duality: it’s docile and comfortable when you need it to be, yet transforms into a performance monster at a moment’s notice. Contrary to some reviews, I find the steering and brakes to be exceptionally communicative. It took a few autocross and track days to fully interpret the feedback, but now, after eight track days and four autocross events, I feel completely connected to the car’s dynamics.

The compromises inherent in the CS model are, for me, entirely acceptable. The absence of traditional cup holders hasn’t been an issue; a Yeti tumbler fits perfectly in the door pocket. Similarly, the lack of a center armrest hasn’t bothered me, even on drives exceeding two hours.

I’ve yet to encounter a situation where another vehicle would have been preferable. My only minor drawbacks are its attention-grabbing nature, despite choosing the Black Sapphire Metallic paint. It undeniably attracts eyes, sometimes unwanted. However, thankfully, law enforcement has been lenient thus far, even without a front license plate.

The Black Sapphire Metallic paint, while stunning, does demand more frequent washing and detailing – a 3-4 hour commitment I’ve learned to appreciate. When pristine, the car is simply breathtaking.

BMW M3 CS: Cost of Ownership and Maintenance

Over the past 15 months, total ownership costs have amounted to $9,940. This figure encompasses all maintenance, parts, labor, insurance, and track/autocross fees. It excludes fuel and monthly car payments.

Consumables and Damages: Track and Daily Wear

To ensure optimal performance and longevity, I’ve proactively performed three engine oil changes. The rear differential oil was changed during the break-in service. For track use, I opted for Pagid RSL29 track pads (now reverted to the original pads for daily driving). The front tires were the first major consumables, requiring replacement after considerable use. I replaced them with a lightly used set to manage costs.

Below is a comparison of the front brake pads: the used Pagid RSL29 track pads (right) and the original pads (left), showcasing the wear difference after track sessions.

Despite careful driving, minor damage occurred to a section of the front spoiler. Fortunately, it’s a smaller, replaceable piece, though still expected to be a notable expense.

Additionally, a small dent was sustained on the front radiator, which currently doesn’t necessitate immediate repair.

Final Verdict: The BMW M3 CS as a Daily Driver and Track Weapon

The BMW M3 CS is definitively not a plush luxury cruiser – and that’s precisely its appeal. It’s firm and focused, yet avoids being harsh or uncomfortable. The suspension tuning is expertly judged for this car, providing minimal body roll while maintaining acceptable road compliance. The Michelin Pilot Sport 4S (PS4S) tires perform exceptionally well on both dry and wet roads and are adequate for track use, though they can overheat relatively quickly. For autocross, however, they are near-perfect.

As the driver, every moment behind the wheel is a joy. Passengers have consistently felt comfortable and content. A memorable long drive with my wife involved scenic routes through farmlands, mountains, and charming villages, accompanied by music and engaging conversations. The M3 CS enhanced these shared experiences, proving to be an excellent companion for both spirited drives and relaxed journeys.

Next Steps for BMW M3 CS Maintenance

Winter maintenance plans include: (1) replacing the damaged front spoiler piece, (2) acquiring dedicated track tires, (3) installing a new set of RSL29 pads for upcoming track days, (4) rebuilding the calipers for optimal brake performance, (5) performing a new alignment to ensure precise handling, and (6) completing engine and transmission oil changes for preventative maintenance.

In conclusion, the BMW M3 CS fulfills all my automotive desires and needs. Perhaps a slightly lower profile would be the only wish. It’s a perfect vehicle, a worthwhile investment, and undoubtedly a long-term keeper. I hope fellow owners derive even greater enjoyment from theirs.

Happy Thanksgiving!
