Before moving forward with the assembly, it was crucial to check the sizing. Who better to test the scale than the target demographic? With Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm (our enthusiastic quality control team) safely positioned within the developing Flintstones car structure, we confirmed that the dimensions were just right. Their excitement and eagerness to participate quickly turned them into valuable assistants, eager to lend a hand in the construction process.
With the dimensions confirmed and our young helpers engaged, we moved on to creating the side openings. Utilizing a hole saw attachment on an electric drill, we carefully cut circular openings into the sides of the car’s base. These openings would serve as mounting points for the upright poles we had prepared earlier. Securing these poles was paramount, as they not only formed part of the Flintstones car structure but also doubled as handles for pushing the vehicle. Employing a combination of robust Gorilla Glue and screws, we firmly mounted the upright poles to the plywood base, ensuring a sturdy and reliable framework for our Flintstones car.

After securing the screws, we would then re-apply a touch of auto body filler (Bondo) to seamlessly conceal the screw holes. The naturally rugged texture of the sides proved to be quite forgiving, effectively camouflaging any evidence of our modifications, maintaining the rustic charm of the Flintstones car.
Once the upright poles were securely in place, we proceeded to integrate the remaining wooden components to complete the Flintstones car‘s framework. Utilizing 3-inch screws in conjunction with wood glue, we systematically attached each piece. To prevent the wood from splitting during assembly, we consistently pre-drilled pilot holes at each screw location. After the wooden top parts were painted in vibrant colors to enhance the cartoonish appeal of the Flintstones car, we moved on to lashing them together. Natural fiber twine was chosen for this step, carefully wrapped around the joints to create that signature Flintstones car lashed look. To ensure the twine remained secure and wouldn’t unravel over time, we meticulously glued all knots and intersecting twine points, creating a robust and visually appealing finish.
The final touch to our Flintstones car was the creation of a protective and aesthetically pleasing cover. We cut a piece of white vinyl canvas to size, which would serve as the car’s canopy. To attach this cover seamlessly yet allow for easy removal when needed, we opted for heavy-duty Velcro strips. These strips were affixed to both the vinyl canvas and the wooden crossbeams using strong contact cement. This method provided a taut and clean look for the cover while maintaining the practicality of easy removal, completing our Flintstones car.
