Is your 2007 Toyota Prius key fob starting to act up? You might notice the car beeping after you turn it off, a reduced operating range, or perhaps it’s not working at all. These are common signs that your key fob battery is getting weak and needs replacing. Don’t worry, this is a straightforward task you can easily do yourself. Since your Prius relies on this electronic key for starting – there’s no traditional mechanical key ignition – keeping your key fob battery fresh is crucial. Typically, these batteries last for 3 to 5 years, so if you haven’t changed yours recently, now might be the time. This guide will walk you through the process of opening your 2007 Prius key fob and replacing the battery.
Tools You’ll Need
Before you begin, gather these simple tools:
- Precision screwdrivers: You’ll need a Philips #0 screwdriver at minimum.
- Thin flat-head screwdriver or paperclip: For gently prying open the battery cover.
Step-by-Step Guide to Opening Your 2007 Prius Key Fob
Follow these easy steps to access and replace the battery in your 2007 Prius key fob:
Step 1: Removing the Mechanical Key
Start by locating the spring-loaded holder on your key fob, positioned at the top when the buttons are facing upwards. Slide this holder to the left (indicated in RED in the image). While holding it in this position, pull the mechanical key upwards and out of the fob (indicated in BLUE). This key is a backup and is removed to allow access to the fob casing.
Step 2: Accessing the Back Panel
Flip the key fob over so the buttons are facing down. Again, locate the spring-loaded holder, this time on the back panel. Slide this holder to the right (RED in the image). While sliding, push the back panel upwards (BLUE). It should slide off relatively easily, revealing the inside of the key fob. If you encounter slight resistance, using a rubber glove can improve your grip.
Step 3: Exposing the Battery
With the back panel removed, you’ll see the battery cover plate secured by four small screws. Use your Philips #0 screwdriver to remove these screws (circled in RED). Once the screws are out, use a paperclip or a thin flat-head screwdriver to gently pry up the battery cover plate. The image shows a BLUE arrow indicating a good spot to insert your tool for prying.
Step 4: Battery Replacement
Now you have access to the old CR2032 battery. Carefully remove the old battery and replace it with a new CR2032 battery. Ensure you place the new battery with the positive (+) side facing upwards, towards the cover panel. Once the new battery is in place, reassemble the key fob by reversing the steps. Replace the battery cover plate and secure it with the four screws. Slide the back panel back into place until it clicks, and finally, slide the mechanical key back into the fob.
By following these steps, you’ve successfully opened your 2007 Prius key fob and replaced its battery. Your key fob should now be working optimally, ensuring you can start and access your Prius without any low battery issues. Remember to dispose of the old battery responsibly.
