The 2025 Hybrid 4Runner: Toyota Redefines Off-Roading with Efficiency

The Toyota 4Runner, a name synonymous with off-road prowess and enduring reliability for four decades, is entering a new era. The all-new 2025 Toyota 4Runner builds upon this legendary foundation, maintaining its core identity as a supremely capable and robust off-roader while introducing cutting-edge technology, premium features, and enhanced safety. For the first time, the 4Runner embraces electrification with the introduction of the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, marking a significant step forward in its evolution. This sixth-generation model elevates both its go-anywhere capability and on-road refinement, promising a blend of ruggedness and modern sophistication that will resonate with both long-time enthusiasts and new adventurers. Set to be manufactured at Toyota Motor Corporation’s Tahara plant in Japan, the 2025 4Runner is anticipated to arrive in the U.S. by the close of 2024.

Dave Christ, Toyota group vice president and general manager, emphasizes the 4Runner’s crucial role within Toyota’s truck lineup, stating, “This all-new 4Runner has incredible versatility and capability that nicely rounds out our truck family story. We’ve sold over 3 million in the 40 years it has been on sale, and this sixth-generation model offers a cool new look and incredible features, yet retains the rugged style and capability our customers love about this icon of adventure.”

Built on a Solid Foundation

The 2025 4Runner represents a complete overhaul, constructed on Toyota’s formidable TNGA-F global truck platform. This robust architecture, shared with models like the Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Tundra, and Sequoia, employs a high-strength boxed, steel-ladder frame. The suspension system features a multi-link coil rear and double wishbone front, engineered for both durability and enhanced ride quality.

The implementation of the TNGA-F platform not only bolsters structural integrity but also significantly improves ride comfort and handling on paved roads. This advancement is noticeable for all passengers, including those in the optional third-row seating. Furthermore, the strengthened frame, in conjunction with the potent i-FORCE MAX powertrain, enables the 4Runner to achieve a towing capacity of up to 6,000 pounds, adding to its versatility.

Evolving a Design Legacy for a New Era

“Designing the legendary 4Runner began with identifying its unique and memorable aspects linked to fun, outdoor recreation,” explains Calty President, Kevin Hunter. “Inspired by Baja desert racing, the high lift, lean body, big tire, rugged athleticism defines the core of 4Runner’s go anywhere purpose”.

The design of the all-new 4Runner was spearheaded by the CALTY design team based in Michigan. Their approach blended retro inspiration with forward-thinking design elements. While sharing design cues with the Tacoma, the 4Runner maintains its distinct identity, both drawing inspiration from desert racing aesthetics and projecting a purposeful ruggedness. A notable homage to the first and second-generation 4Runners is the return of the “wrap over” quarter glass, while the signature roll-down rear window remains a defining feature.

Interior design was approached with a focus on operational ease and functionality. The aim was to create a space that balances modern refinement with practical authenticity. Features like the second-row tumble seats enhance the interior’s adaptability and maximize usable cargo space, catering to the needs of adventurous owners.

i-FORCE MAX Hybrid Power Takes Center Stage

The 2025 4Runner powertrain lineup features two turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder options, headlined by the innovative i-FORCE MAX hybrid system. The standard i-FORCE engine delivers a robust 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque, coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This engine will power the SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited grades.

However, the spotlight shines on the available i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, a game-changer for the 4Runner. Offered on TRD Off-Road and Limited models, and standard on TRD Pro, Trailhunter, and Platinum grades, this system combines the turbocharged 2.4-liter engine with a 48-hp electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission. Powered by a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack, the i-FORCE MAX hybrid system achieves a combined output of up to 326 horsepower and an impressive 465 lb.-ft. of torque. This makes it the most potent powertrain ever offered in a 4Runner, delivering enhanced performance and efficiency.

Unleashing Trail-Ready Hybrid Capability

The 4Runner’s reputation is built on its exceptional off-road capability, and the latest iteration, especially with the hybrid powertrain, elevates this legacy. The newly available Stabilizer Bar Disconnect Mechanism enhances suspension articulation at the touch of a button, maximizing wheel contact with uneven terrain. The 4Runner boasts impressive approach and departure angles, up to 32 degrees and 24 degrees respectively, further solidifying its off-road credentials. The optional Multi-Terrain Monitor system provides drivers with a clear view of potential obstacles on the central display, enhancing safety and control.

The 2025 4Runner offers a choice of 2WD, part-time 4WD, or full-time 4WD systems. 2WD models are equipped with an automatic limited-slip differential (Auto LSD), while 4WD models feature an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range, Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), and Auto LSD. An electronic locking rear differential comes standard on TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter grades, maximizing traction in challenging conditions. The Limited and Platinum i-FORCE MAX hybrid models offer an available full-time four-wheel-drive system with a center locking differential, providing enhanced all-weather and all-terrain capability.

The Multi-Terrain Select system now operates in both 4WD-High and 4WD-Low modes, offering tailored settings for various terrains like Mud, Dirt, and Sand. The 4Runner also incorporates the updated CRAWL Control function, a low-speed, off-road cruise control that allows the driver to concentrate on steering through difficult obstacles. For extreme low-traction situations, the available electronically activated locking rear differential can distribute power evenly (50/50) to the rear wheels. Downhill Assist Control further aids in off-road driving by managing vehicle speed during steep descents.
