When Jaguar unveiled the C-X75 in 2010, it signaled the dawn of a new era of innovation and technological advancement for the brand. What began as a striking design concept rapidly evolved into a fully functional prototype within a mere two years. This incredibly swift transformation saw Jaguar, in collaboration with Williams Advanced Engineering, create a groundbreaking all-wheel-drive, plug-in parallel hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). The Jaguar C-X75 was engineered with the world’s highest specific power engine and showcased Jaguar’s first carbon composite monocoque chassis.
Despite the difficult decision in 2012 to not proceed with full production due to the global economic climate, the Jaguar C-X75 project served as a powerful demonstration of Jaguar’s world-leading expertise in lightweight vehicle construction. More importantly, it became the ideal testbed for the company’s pioneering research into high-performance, low emission powertrains.
The significant achievements during the development of the Jaguar C-X75 prototypes, particularly in cutting-edge hybrid technologies, innovative carbon composite materials, and advanced design solutions developed in partnership with Williams Advanced Engineering, were not in vain. These advancements are now being utilized in various other areas of Jaguar’s research and development, informing innovative future products and shaping the next-generation of engineering for the Jaguar brand.
“The C-X75 programme represents the pinnacle of Jaguar’s engineering and design expertise,” stated Adrian Hallmark, Global Brand Director, Jaguar. “It is arguably the world’s fastest test-bed for the world’s most advanced technologies, combining as it does a remarkable hybrid powertrain with awe-inspiring performance. Jaguar is always looking to shape the cars of tomorrow and with projects like C-X75 we are laying the foundations for the next generation of Jaguar innovations.”
At the heart of the Jaguar C-X75 lies an extraordinary powertrain, boasting the highest power and torque density. The car achieves a combined power output exceeding 850 horsepower (633.84 kW) and a staggering 1000 Nm of torque. This is made possible by its state-of-the-art, Formula 1-inspired 1.6-liter dual-boosted (turbocharged and supercharged) four-cylinder powerplant. This remarkable engine alone generates 502 horsepower (374.34 kW) at a breathtaking 10,000 rpm.
This potent engine is further enhanced by the highest torque and power density electric motors in production at the time, contributing an additional 387 horsepower (286.84 kW). The battery pack within the Jaguar C-X75 is recognized as the highest continuously rated power PHEV pack globally, capable of delivering over 300 kW across its full state of charge window.
The sheer power of the Jaguar C-X75 translates to blistering performance. It can accelerate from 0-100 mph (0-160 km/h) in under 6 seconds, thanks to its advanced 7-speed automated manual transmission enabling gearshifts in less than 200 milliseconds. The very first Jaguar C-X75 prototype effortlessly surpassed 200 mph (321 km/h) during testing, hinting at a theoretical maximum velocity of 220 mph (354 km/h).
Complementing its immense power is sophisticated aerodynamics. The car’s deployable aerofoil and underfloor aerodynamics generate over 200 kg of downforce at 200 mph (321 km/h), while active systems further enhance high-speed stability, ensuring exceptional handling and control.
Beyond its performance prowess, the Jaguar C-X75 also demonstrated ultra-low emissions and the capability to operate in pure electric vehicle mode. Thanks to its cutting-edge PHEV specification, it could travel for 60 km solely on electric power, showcasing Jaguar’s commitment to both performance and sustainability.
The Jaguar C-X75 project, though not resulting in a production vehicle, stands as a testament to Jaguar’s technical leadership at the forefront of automotive development and manufacturing. It pushed the boundaries of power, performance, and fuel efficiency, leaving a lasting legacy of innovation that continues to inspire Jaguar’s future endeavors.
