2023 Jeep Gladiator Review: More Than Just a Cool-Looking Truck

For any true auto enthusiast, there’s a moment of realization: Jeeps are undeniably cool. My first experience behind the wheel of a 2023 Jeep Gladiator was precisely that moment. It’s a vehicle that challenges conventional truck norms, and for many, that’s a big part of its appeal.

The 2023 Gladiator isn’t without its quirks. It’s not the sleekest, quietest, or most aerodynamic vehicle on the road. Wind noise at higher speeds is noticeable, and its boxy design does get pushed around a bit by strong gusts. However, these minor drawbacks fade into insignificance when you consider the sheer fun and unique driving experience it offers. In fact, despite its imperfections, my time with the Gladiator was arguably the most enjoyable I’ve ever had in a pickup truck.

This review is based on my personal rental experience with the Sport model, and I paid for it out of my own pocket. This means you’re getting an unbiased and genuinely honest assessment of the 2023 Jeep Gladiator. There are no sponsorships influencing my opinion, and no need to pull any punches. These are my unfiltered thoughts on this distinctive vehicle.


“Okay, I finally understand the Jeep allure.” It took me a while, but the fun factor of a Jeep is undeniable. Call me a late bloomer, but I get it now.

Initial Impressions: Embracing the Unique (and Slightly Ugly)

Let’s be frank: the Gladiator is not going to win any beauty contests. In fact, I initially found it to be one of the less aesthetically pleasing vehicles currently available. However, in the automotive world, sometimes “ugly” is actually a virtue. Its design is so distinct, so unlike any other pickup on the market, that it becomes strangely appealing. It’s the automotive equivalent of an ugly duckling – so unconventional that it circles back to being cool. It’s so uniquely awkward that you can’t help but appreciate its bold departure from the norm. It’s an acquired taste, perhaps, but one that grows on you quickly.

That’s undeniably a unique-looking truck, for better or worse. Hopefully, the puddles underneath are just from rain and not a sign of rental car woes!


The rear end design is… polarizing, to put it mildly. It’s definitely not subtle.


There’s no mistaking that iconic Jeep front grille. Unless, perhaps, you’re a very young child with a penchant for Italian sports cars.


Is it love or hate? Perhaps a bit of both. One thing’s for sure, you’ll never lose it in a parking lot.

Inside the Gladiator: Rugged Simplicity and Utilitarian Design

For those who have read my previous breakdown of Jeep Gladiator pros and cons, you’ll know I’m a fan of the interior. It’s functional, durable, and perfectly suited to the Jeep ethos.


The Gladiator’s interior isn’t about luxury, but it wins points for practicality and a rugged charm. It’s grown on me.

The interior design of the 2023 Gladiator isn’t aiming for awards in aesthetics, but it wins you over with its robust and straightforward approach. I appreciate its ruggedness and overall simplicity. Everything feels durable and ready for adventure. The materials are clearly chosen for their ability to withstand wear and tear, and the fact that you could essentially hose down the entire interior after a muddy off-road excursion is a major plus. It looks and feels like a truck interior should – completely unpretentious and focused on function over frills. In my opinion, it embodies exactly what a Jeep interior should be.


Practical climate controls are a big win. Easy to use even with gloves on, or, hypothetically, in other compromised states.


Definitely not a Lamborghini interior. This dashboard is pure, unadulterated Jeep.


Kids will adore the backseat space. Plenty of room for average-sized adults too.


Utilitarian is the key word here. ‘Burley’ might even be a better descriptor for some of the materials.


The steering wheel and gauge cluster are refreshingly simple and well-organized. If only the exterior had taken a few cues from this…


The good and the slightly annoying: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, but they don’t utilize the full screen real estate.

Driving Dynamics: Surprisingly Easy and Comfortable

The 2023 Gladiator Sport proves to be surprisingly user-friendly for daily driving. It’s easily one of the most ‘livable’ trucks I’ve experienced. The steering is light, perhaps even a touch too light, making it as maneuverable as a compact car like a 2017 Kia Forte. Visibility from the driver’s seat is generally good, although the over-the-shoulder blind spot on the left side is a notable annoyance.


It’s not a sports car, but the Gladiator is surprisingly agile and easy to handle, even off the beaten path.

One of the most impressive aspects of driving the 2023 Gladiator is its ability to handle rough road surfaces. Compared to other mid-size trucks, such as the 2021 Toyota Tacoma, the Gladiator absorbs bumps and imperfections in the road with remarkable composure. It glides over uneven terrain without the rear end feeling unsettled or prone to losing traction. It maintains a planted and smooth feel across a variety of surfaces, contributing to a comfortable and confident driving experience.

While not quite a sports car, the fun factor of driving the Gladiator is surprisingly high.

Let’s be clear, it’s no Corvette in terms of speed or handling, but the Gladiator offers a different kind of driving enjoyment.

Engine and Transmission: Adequate but Could Use More Power

The 2023 Gladiator Sport is equipped with a 3.6-liter V6 engine, producing 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. While these figures are respectable on paper, in practice, the engine feels somewhat underpowered, particularly when it comes to acceleration. It’s adequate for maintaining speed once you’re up to cruising velocity, but getting there can feel a bit sluggish. Pulling away from traffic lights lacks urgency, and merging onto busy highways can be a slightly more anxious experience than it needs to be.


The 3.6L V6 is a workhorse, but some drivers might crave more power, especially for highway merging and passing.


Under the hood, space is limited, perhaps dashing any dreams of easy performance upgrades.

Storage and Utility: Compact Bed, Decent Towing

Despite being classified as a pickup truck, the Gladiator features a relatively small truck bed compared to other models in its segment. It’s not designed for hauling large or bulky items on a regular basis. Trying to fit a standard 4×8 sheet of plywood in the bed is simply not going to happen.


The bed is on the smaller side for a pickup. Best for smaller loads and weekend gear, not major construction materials.

However, it’s worth noting that the Gladiator does offer a respectable towing capacity of 7,700 lbs for its size. While it might not feel like it has the grunt to pull that much weight based on its acceleration, the numbers suggest it’s quite capable in the towing department.

Those tow hooks are a Jeep signature, and likely to be used for off-road adventures, or maybe just getting pulled out of a ditch by a friend.

Off-Road Prowess: Capable Even in Base Trim

The Gladiator Sport, even in its base configuration with street tires and standard suspension, demonstrates impressive off-road capabilities. It can confidently venture off paved roads and handle terrain that would be challenging, if not impossible, for many other midsize SUVs.

Even with street tires, the 17-inch wheels and Gladiator’s inherent design make it surprisingly capable off-road.

Fuel Economy: Thirsty for a Modern Truck

Perhaps due to its brick-like aerodynamics, the fuel economy of the 3.6L V6 Gladiator is disappointing. During my test, I averaged a mere 19 miles per gallon, and that was with relatively conservative driving. For a modern vehicle, and especially considering its engine output, the gas mileage is definitely on the lower end.


Fuel stops will likely be frequent. The Gladiator isn’t the most economical choice at the pump.

Final Verdict: Fun Over Function (But Still Plenty Functional)

The 2023 Jeep Gladiator is a vehicle that prioritizes fun and a unique driving experience over outright practicality in some areas. It’s not the most fuel-efficient, powerful, or spacious truck in its class. However, it possesses an undeniable charm and capability that sets it apart. If you’re looking for a pickup that’s as comfortable cruising down city streets as it is tackling light off-road trails, and you value distinctive styling and a rugged character, the Gladiator is definitely worth considering. It’s a truck that’s less about pure utility and more about enjoying the journey, wherever it may take you.
