Key Fob Programming for GMC Acadia: A Comprehensive Guide

Key fobs offer convenience and security for your GMC Acadia, but losing or needing to replace one can be a hassle. Luckily, programming a new key fob for your GMC Acadia can often be done yourself, saving you a trip to the dealership. This guide provides step-by-step instructions for programming your GMC Acadia key fob, whether you have recognized transmitters or not.

Programming with Recognized Transmitters

This method is applicable when you have two working key fobs already recognized by your GMC Acadia. The process is relatively straightforward and allows you to quickly add a new key fob to your vehicle’s system. Ensure all transmitters – both the recognized ones and the new ones – are with you throughout the programming process.

  1. Begin by placing your two recognized key fobs into the cup holder of your GMC Acadia. This ensures they are readily available and won’t interfere with the programming steps.

  2. Locate the key lock cylinder cap on the driver’s side door handle and remove it. Insert the vehicle key that comes with your new transmitter into this key lock cylinder. Turn the key counterclockwise to the unlock position five times within a 10-second timeframe. This action signals to the vehicle that you are initiating the key fob programming sequence.

After successfully completing this step, the Driver Information Center (DIC) located in your instrument cluster will display the message “READY FOR REMOTE #2, 3, 4, ETC.” This indicates that your GMC Acadia is now in programming mode and ready to learn a new key fob.

  3. Next, take the new transmitter and place it into the designated transmitter pocket. This pocket is typically located inside the center console storage area, situated between the driver and front passenger seats. Refer to your owner’s manual if you are unsure of the exact location of the transmitter pocket in your GMC Acadia model.

  4. Once the new transmitter is securely placed in the pocket, press the ENGINE START/STOP button. This action initiates the learning process for the new transmitter. When the transmitter is successfully learned by the system, the DIC display will update to indicate that it is ready to program the next transmitter, if applicable.

  5. Remove the newly programmed transmitter from the transmitter pocket. Press the UNLOCK or LOCK button on the transmitter to confirm successful programming. If you need to program additional transmitters, repeat Steps 3 through 5. After you have programmed all desired transmitters, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for approximately 12 seconds to exit the programming mode.

  6. Finally, remember to put the key back into the newly programmed transmitter for convenient storage and use.

Programming without Recognized Transmitters

If you do not have two recognized key fobs available, you can still program new transmitters to your GMC Acadia using a different procedure. This method is more time-consuming, taking approximately 30 minutes to complete, and it’s important to note that this feature may not be available in Canada. Ensure you have all the transmitters you wish to program with you before starting.

  1. Begin by removing the key lock cylinder cap on the driver door handle. Insert the vehicle key of the transmitter into the key lock cylinder and turn the key, counterclockwise, to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds, just as in the previous method.

The Driver Information Center (DIC) will display the message “REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.” This indicates that the system is initiating the longer programming sequence because recognized transmitters were not detected.

  2. Now, you must wait for 10 minutes. After this waiting period, the DIC display will change to “PRESS ENGINE START BUTTON TO LEARN.” Once you see this message, press the ENGINE START/STOP button. The DIC display will revert back to “REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.”

  3. Repeat Step 2 two additional times. This means you will go through the 10-minute waiting process a total of three times. It is crucial to complete all three waiting periods for the programming to proceed correctly. After the third 10-minute wait, all previously known transmitters will no longer function with the vehicle. This is a security measure to ensure only the transmitters you are currently programming will work with your GMC Acadia.

The DIC display should now show “READY FOR REMOTE # 1.” This indicates that the vehicle has cleared the old transmitter information and is ready to learn new key fobs.

  4. Place the new transmitter into the transmitter pocket, located in the center console storage area.

  5. Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. When the transmitter is learned, the DIC display will show “READY FOR REMOTE #2” or indicate it’s ready for the next transmitter.

  6. Remove the transmitter from the transmitter pocket and press the UNLOCK or LOCK button on the transmitter to confirm programming. To program additional transmitters, repeat Steps 4–6. When you have programmed all desired transmitters, press and hold ENGINE START/STOP for 12 seconds to exit programming mode.

  7. Finally, put the key back into the transmitter.

By following these instructions, you should be able to successfully program a new key fob for your GMC Acadia. Always refer to your GMC Acadia owner’s manual for the most accurate and vehicle-specific instructions and information.
