The E63’s design is a product of close collaboration between designers and aerodynamic engineers. This synergy resulted not only in the striking AMG bodystyling but also in performance-optimized lift balance. This ensures both agile handling on winding roads and exceptional driving stability at high speeds on highways. Engineers prioritized minimizing wind noise and aerodynamic drag for enhanced fuel efficiency, alongside robust thermal management for all vehicle systems. The rear spoiler, specifically tailored to the sedan’s airflow, effectively reduces lift on the rear axle.
Engine Innovation: 4.0L V8 Biturbo with Twin-Scroll Turbochargers
The heart of the Mercedes-AMG E63 S is its potent 4.0L V8 biturbo engine, pushing performance boundaries with 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, available across a broad rev range from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm. This immense power facilitates a blistering 0-60 mph sprint in just 3.3 seconds, with acceleration limited only by the electronically governed top speed of 186 mph.
This advanced AMG 4.0L V8 biturbo engine incorporates proven twin-turbocharging technology, where the two turbochargers are strategically positioned not on the outer cylinder banks, but within the V-angle of the cylinders. This “hot inner V” configuration yields a compact engine design, instantaneous turbocharger response thanks to short gas paths, and reduced emissions due to optimized airflow to the close-coupled catalytic converters.
For the first time, the E63 S utilizes two twin-scroll turbochargers to further amplify performance and responsiveness. Each turbocharger housing is divided into two parallel flow passages. Paired with separate exhaust ducts in the exhaust manifold, this design allows for independent control of exhaust gases on the turbine wheel. Exhaust gas from cylinders one and four of a cylinder bank feed into one duct, while cylinders two and three feed into the other. This innovative approach prevents interference between individual cylinders in the exhaust cycle, reducing back pressure and improving gas exchange. The result is increased power output through enhanced cylinder charge, greater torque at lower RPMs, and immediate throttle response.
Further engine enhancements include new pistons, optimized air intake and charge air cooling systems, and extensive software refinements. Features carried over include spray-guided direct petrol injection with piezo injectors, an all-aluminum crankcase, four-valve-per-cylinder design with camshaft adjustment, air-water charge air cooling, alternator management, ECO start/stop function, and gliding mode. Collectively, these technologies ensure the eight-cylinder engine delivers thrilling power and rapid acceleration across the entire engine speed range, while maintaining impressive efficiency for reduced fuel consumption and emissions.
AMG Cylinder Management: Enhanced Efficiency
To maximize fuel efficiency, Mercedes-AMG has integrated AMG Cylinder Management, a cylinder deactivation system, into the V8 engine. Previously proven effective in models like the SLK55, this technology makes its debut in a turbocharged AMG engine. In partial-load operation within the “Comfort” transmission mode and engine speeds ranging from 1,000 to 3,250 rpm, cylinders two, three, five, and eight are deactivated, significantly reducing fuel consumption.
The AMG main menu within the instrument cluster provides real-time information to the driver, indicating when cylinder deactivation is active and whether the engine is operating in partial or full-load mode. The transition between four and eight-cylinder operation is seamless and imperceptible, ensuring no compromise in passenger comfort.
Intelligent Valve Control for Cylinder Deactivation
This seamless transition is achieved through intelligent interaction between the high-performance engine management system and CAMTRONIC valve lift adjustment, a technology similarly employed in four-cylinder engines. Eight dual actuators manage the axially sliding cam units of the intake and exhaust camshafts via shift gates in half-engine mode. Cylinder deactivation is achieved by closing the intake and exhaust valves of cylinders two, three, five, and eight. This not only minimizes load-change losses from the deactivated cylinders but also boosts the efficiency of the remaining active cylinders by shifting their operating point to higher load ranges.
AMG Performance 4MATIC+ Variable All-Wheel Drive: Optimal Traction and Drift Capability
The E63 S exclusively features the innovative AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system. This newly developed intelligent system merges the advantages of different drive configurations, providing fully variable torque distribution between the front and rear axles to ensure peak traction, even at the limits of grip. Drivers benefit from enhanced driving stability and handling safety across varied road surfaces, be it dry, wet, or snow-covered. The transition between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive is seamless, orchestrated by intelligent control integrated into the vehicle’s overall system architecture.
An electromechanically controlled coupling variably connects the permanently driven rear axle to the front axle. The optimal torque distribution is continuously calculated based on driving conditions and driver input. This allows the performance sedan to transition smoothly from traction-focused all-wheel drive to purely rear-wheel drive. These transitions are seamless and governed by a sophisticated matrix. Beyond traction and lateral dynamics, the all-wheel drive system also enhances longitudinal dynamics, contributing to even more powerful acceleration.
Importantly, the fully variable torque distribution retains the ability to drift. Drift Mode, standard on the E63 S and accessible within the “Race” drive program using the shift paddles (with ESP® deactivated and transmission in manual mode), transforms the E63 S into a purely rear-wheel drive vehicle. Drift Mode remains active until manually deactivated by the driver.
AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9-Speed Sport Transmission: Rapid Shifts and Efficiency
The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT nine-speed sport transmission is specifically calibrated to the demands of the new E63 S, involving comprehensive hardware and software re-engineering.
Specialized software enables exceptionally fast shift times, rapid multiple downshifts, and a double-clutching function, creating an emotionally engaging gear-shifting experience. A wet start-off clutch replaces the traditional torque converter, reducing weight and optimizing response to accelerator pedal inputs, particularly during acceleration and load changes.
AMG DYNAMIC SELECT: Personalized Driving Dynamics
The AMG DYNAMIC SELECT system offers four distinct drive programs – “Comfort,” “Sport,” “Sport Plus,” and “Individual” – allowing drivers to extensively tailor the E63 S’s characteristics. These programs modify key parameters including engine response, transmission behavior, suspension settings, steering feel, ESP® intervention, and all-wheel drive system operation. Independent of DYNAMIC SELECT, the “M” button enables direct manual mode selection, where gearshifts are exclusively controlled via the steering wheel shift paddles. Suspension settings can also be independently adjusted.
“Comfort” mode provides a balanced driving experience with comfort-oriented suspension and steering, fuel-efficient powertrain configuration, and early upshifts for smooth gear changes and a subdued engine sound. Cylinder deactivation, ECO start/stop function, and gliding mode are activated. Gliding mode, active between 37 and 99 mph when the accelerator is released, disengages the MCT transmission clutch, decoupling the engine from the powertrain. The engine speed reduces to idle, and motion resistance is minimized by reducing compression and frictional forces in overrun mode.
“Sport” and “Sport Plus” DYNAMIC SELECT programs prioritize high vehicle dynamics. They deliver an agile accelerator pedal response, emotive shift operations with reduced shift times, and double-clutching on downshifts. “Sport Plus” mode further increases idle speed for particularly rapid starts and enhanced acceleration from a standstill. The E63 S also includes the “RACE” drive program, designed for maximum performance on closed circuits, optimizing all parameters for peak capability.
RACESTART: Simplified Launch Control
The RACESTART function, for optimal acceleration from a standstill, features a simplified control logic. In Sport, Sport Plus, or RACE modes, the driver simply applies firm pressure to the brake pedal with their left foot and simultaneously fully depresses the accelerator with their right. The system automatically sets the optimal engine speed. Shift paddles can be used to fine-tune engine speed based on conditions or road surface. Releasing the brake pedal initiates launch control, propelling the E63 S to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds with maximum traction.
AMG Sport Suspension: Engineered for Lateral and Longitudinal Dynamics
The exceptional agility and cornering prowess of the new E63 S are underpinned by the completely re-engineered AMG sport suspension. Based on AIR BODY CONTROL fully supporting multi-chamber air suspension, it delivers superior camber stability. It balances dynamic handling and steering precision with a high degree of ride comfort.
A four-link front axle design employs forged aluminum components including wishbones, strut rod, and spring link. The suspension strut supports vehicle weight via the supporting link, enhancing body control. Independent wheel control and suspension components, combined with the increased track width, enable higher lateral acceleration and minimized torque steer.
The model-specific, entirely re-engineered rear axle is specifically tuned to the performance sedan’s heightened dynamics. The multi-link concept ensures highly precise wheel control and increased stiffness. The AMG-specific rear axle carrier accommodates the wider track, with wheel bearing contact surfaces moved outwards compared to the standard Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan. Further enhancements include AMG-specific wheel carriers, elastokinematic tuning optimized for vehicle dynamics, and increased negative camber. Newly developed elastokinematics ensure E-Class-level comfort alongside high precision and vehicle dynamics.
The rear axle differential features a new mount to improve NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) characteristics, complemented by additional bracing and welds. An anti-roll bar made from tubular material, similar to the AMG GT R, reduces rear axle weight and is adapted to the increased dynamics of the new performance sedan.
Radial brake connections, derived from motorsport, enhance handling agility and precision by increasing rigidity against suspension vibrations and forces. Special rubber bushes on the axles and new elastokinematics improve camber stability by 30 percent compared to the previous E63 model.
Three-Chamber Air Suspension: Personalized Ride Experience
The air suspension system, featuring three chambers, a sporty spring/damper setup, and continuously adjustable damping, further refines driving experience personalization. It blends exceptional vehicle dynamics with excellent noise and vibration isolation. Activating or deactivating individual air chambers allows fine-tuning of air spring stiffness, enhancing both comfort and handling.
Extensive trials and test drives enabled AMG engineers to define three spring tuning settings, dynamically adjusting based on the selected drive program and driving conditions. During sudden load changes, rapid cornering, hard acceleration, or heavy braking, spring rate automatically stiffens on the front or rear axle, effectively reducing roll and pitch, and stabilizing the performance sedan.
“Comfort” mode prioritizes ride comfort, absorbing road irregularities for a smooth ride. “Sport” mode significantly enhances dynamics with reduced roll due to a firmer spring rate. “Sport Plus” mode further boosts agility and cornering capability with even stiffer front and rear axle suspension.
Adaptive damping offers three selectable stages – “Comfort,” “Sport,” and “Sport Plus” – allowing drivers to choose between relaxed comfort on long journeys and maximum sportiness. Rebound and compression levels are independently adjusted, with freely programmable characteristics enabling a wide spectrum between minimum and maximum damper force. The difference between comfortable and sporty suspension settings is more refined and perceptibly enhanced depending on driving conditions.
The comprehensive package delivers: The AMG E63 S Sedan combines steering precision and peak longitudinal and lateral dynamics with maximum traction, while simultaneously elevating ride comfort.
Electronic Rear Differential Lock: Optimal Traction for Track and Road
To maximize traction and vehicle dynamics, the E63 S features an electronically controlled rear differential lock. Both differentials minimize wheel slip on the inside wheel during cornering, without braking system intervention. This enables earlier and more powerful acceleration out of corners due to improved traction. The car remains more stable during high-speed braking, and the limited-slip differential also enhances traction during acceleration. The electronic control offers more sensitive and proactive control, raising performance thresholds and simplifying driving at the vehicle’s limits. The limited-slip differential housing incorporates additional cooling fins for optimal thermal management.
The three-stage ESP® system, offering “ESP ON,” “ESP SPORT Handling Mode,” and “ESP OFF” settings, works in perfect synergy with the rear-axle limited-slip differential and AMG 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, optimally tuned for outstanding dynamics.
Dynamic Engine Mounts: Standard on E63 S
Unique in its segment, the E63 S is equipped with dynamic engine mounts. These address the inherent conflict between achieving a soft powertrain connection for comfort and a rigid connection for optimal dynamics. Dynamic mounts variably adapt their stiffness to driving conditions and demands, enhancing vehicle precision during dynamic driving. Steering response and feedback become more direct. Cornering feels more precise, reducing the need for driver corrections due to minimized movement of major assemblies. On the racetrack, mount rigidity is maximized, further reducing inertia of major assemblies and improving lap times. Conversely, softer mounts noticeably enhance comfort on uneven road surfaces. Increased damping stabilizes the powertrain rapidly on undulating surfaces.
AMG Sport Speed-Sensitive Steering: Direct and Responsive
The electromechanical speed-sensitive sport steering in the E63 S features a variable ratio, distinguished by the AMG-specific rack-and-pinion ratio for precise feedback. Steering power assistance is variably adjusted across “Comfort,” “Sport,” and “Sport Plus” modes, automatically activated based on the selected DYNAMIC SELECT drive program or personalized in “Individual” mode. Minimal steering input is required at low speeds, while solid straight-line stability is maintained at high speeds. A clearly defined center bearing and authentic feedback contribute to optimal steering feel.
AMG High-Performance Braking System: Fade-Resistant and Sensitive
The large AMG high-performance braking system delivers reliable, rapid deceleration and fade resistance even under extreme loads. The E63 S features 15.4″ x 1.4″ compound brake discs on the front axle.
