For years, whispers have circulated within automotive circles about Ford potentially expanding the Mustang lineup to include a sedan variant. Considering the current price tag of a Mustang GT, often exceeding $50,000 with options, and the shifting demographics of car buyers, a more practical version could resonate with Mustang enthusiasts who need a daily driver that accommodates family needs without sacrificing the Mustang spirit. This concept of a Mustang Mach 4, while still unconfirmed by Ford, has gained traction with a recent trademark filing, reigniting speculation.
This week, Ford Authority uncovered a significant trademark application from Ford for the name “Mach 4.” Filed on February 25th, 2025, under serial number 99055118, the application explicitly covers “Motor vehicles, namely gasoline and electric automobiles, pick-up trucks, sport utility vehicles and their structural parts.” This broad categorization strongly suggests a vehicle application for the mustang mach 4 moniker.
Adding further weight to the mustang mach 4 sedan theory is a report from Automotive News. According to their sources, Ford dealers were given a sneak peek last August at a four-door Mustang concept reportedly named Mach 4. This reveal occurred during the same meeting where the pre-built, Ford-approved Mustang RTR was showcased – a model that has since been officially confirmed. The fact that one element from that dealer meeting has materialized lends credibility to the possibility of other reveals, including the mustang mach 4, becoming reality.

The scope of the trademark application itself further fuels the four-door Mustang speculation. Its classification encompasses vehicles and structural components. While “Mach 4” could theoretically allude to an all-wheel-drive system, the trademark’s wording doesn’t explicitly point to powertrain technologies. Although an all-wheel-drive Mustang coupe would be appealing in regions with harsh winter conditions, the current evidence suggests the mustang mach 4 trademark is intended for something more substantial than just a drivetrain upgrade.

Another piece of the puzzle is a 2023 agreement between Ford and the United Auto Workers union.
