Volvo EX90: Unveiling the All-Electric 7-Seater SUV for a New Era

The Volvo Ex90 emerges as a true seven-seater, all-electric SUV, elevating safety benchmarks and embracing a more sustainable lifestyle. This vehicle signifies the dawn of a new epoch for Volvo, firmly charting a course towards a fully electric future.

Volvo’s commitment to electrification is underscored by the plan to unveil a new fully electric car annually, commencing with the Volvo EX90. By 2030, the ambition is to exclusively sell fully electric vehicles, positioning Volvo as a leader with one of the most assertive electrification strategies in the automotive sector. This transition is pivotal to Volvo’s overarching goal of becoming a climate-neutral company by 2040.

The global unveiling of this flagship electric SUV took place in Stockholm, Sweden, paying homage to Volvo’s Scandinavian heritage. Reflecting its worldwide presence, the Volvo EX90 is slated for production in the USA starting next year, followed by manufacturing in China. Volvo aims for both production facilities to achieve climate neutrality, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable manufacturing.

Scandinavian Design Meets Cutting-Edge Technology in the Volvo EX90

The Volvo EX90 embodies a new classic in Scandinavian design, where form unequivocally follows function. This SUV is a versatile and stylish family vehicle, characterized by modern proportions and equipped with state-of-the-art technology in core computing, connectivity, and electrification. These advancements are meticulously integrated to optimize safety, efficiency, and aesthetic appeal.

“The Volvo EX90 is a definitive statement of our current position and our future direction,” stated Jim Rowan, Volvo’s chief executive. “It is fully electric, boasting a range of up to 600 kilometers on a single charge, and is engineered to further enhance our safety standards. As the first Volvo car truly defined by its software, it integrates seamlessly into a broader ecosystem, connecting with your home and other devices. The Volvo EX90 marks the beginning of a transformative phase for Volvo Cars in numerous aspects.”

Unparalleled Safety Features: Protecting You and Your Loved Ones

Safety in the Volvo EX90 transcends previous Volvo models, setting a new benchmark. It is meticulously designed to comprehend both the driver and its surrounding environment, proactively safeguarding occupants and other road users. Furthermore, the Volvo EX90 is engineered to evolve, becoming progressively smarter and safer through continuous learning from new data and over-the-air updates.

The Volvo EX90 incorporates an invisible shield of safety, powered by the latest sensing technology both inside and outside the vehicle. Advanced sensors, including cameras, radars, and lidar, are connected to the car’s high-performance core computers. These computers, running NVIDIA DRIVE and Volvo Cars’ proprietary software, create a real-time, 360-degree perception of the world around the car.

Unlike human senses, these sensors are immune to fatigue and distractions. They are engineered to respond and react swiftly, even when human reaction might be marginally delayed. The lidar system, provided by Luminar, is capable of perceiving the road ahead in diverse conditions, day or night, and at highway speeds. It can detect small objects hundreds of meters away, providing crucial extra time to inform the driver, initiate actions, and avert potential hazards. These sensors also enhance the reliability and overall efficacy of Pilot Assist, Volvo’s assisted driving function, introducing improved steering support during lane changes.

The interior safety system of the Volvo EX90 also features an invisible shield, vigilantly monitoring the driver. Specialized sensors and cameras, driven by Volvo’s in-house developed algorithms, assess eye gaze concentration. This technology empowers the Volvo EX90 to discern instances of driver distraction, drowsiness, or inattentiveness with a precision previously unattainable in a Volvo car.

The system will initially issue gentle alerts, escalating to more insistent warnings if necessary. In the event of a critical situation, such as the driver falling asleep or becoming incapacitated, the Volvo EX90 is designed to safely bring the vehicle to a stop and automatically summon assistance.

Notably, the Volvo EX90, equipped with a state-of-the-art sensor suite including lidar, is the first Volvo vehicle that is hardware-ready for future unsupervised driving capabilities.

Technology with Purpose: A Computer on Wheels

A central system, fueled by NVIDIA DRIVE AI platforms Xavier and Orin, Snapdragon® Cockpit Platforms from Qualcomm Technologies, and Volvo-engineered software, orchestrates the core functions within the Volvo EX90. This encompasses everything from safety and infotainment to battery management, resulting in a more responsive and enjoyable in-car experience.

The Volvo EX90 transcends the conventional notion of a new car; it is a sophisticated computer on wheels. Mirroring smartphones and laptops, the Volvo EX90 is designed for continuous improvement through regular over-the-air software updates, ensuring it remains at the forefront of automotive technology.

By integrating the advanced computing capabilities of Snapdragon Cockpit Platforms with the visualization prowess of Unreal Engine – the 3D tool from Epic Games, renowned for powering leading video games – the Volvo EX90 delivers rapid processing and high-fidelity graphics on its in-car screens and head-up display.

A 14.5-inch center screen serves as the primary interface to a top-tier infotainment system featuring Google built-in. This integration provides seamless access to Google apps and services, including hands-free assistance from Google Assistant, Google Maps navigation, and a wide array of apps available on Google Play. The displays in the Volvo EX90 are thoughtfully designed to present essential information at the optimal moment, minimizing driver distraction and maximizing road awareness. The Volvo EX90 will also offer wireless Apple CarPlay compatibility, catering to a broad spectrum of user preferences.

Leveraging standard 5G connectivity where available, installing preferred apps and experiencing intuitive navigation is effortlessly streamlined. Users can also enjoy high-quality music streaming via the new Bowers & Wilkins audio system, featuring Dolby Atmos – a first for Volvo – along with headrest-integrated speakers for an immersive auditory experience.

The Volvo EX90 also incorporates phone key technology as a standard feature. Your smartphone acts as the car key, automatically unlocking the vehicle and initiating a personalized welcome sequence upon approach. Upon entering the car, individual driver profiles are automatically loaded, customizing the vehicle settings.

All these technological elements converge within one of the most refined and elegant car interiors available, characterized by natural and responsibly sourced materials. The interior composition reflects Volvo’s broader sustainability objectives, aiming to become a fully circular and climate-neutral company by 2040.

Sustainability at its Core: Supporting a More Sustainable Lifestyle

Built upon a brand-new, in-house developed fully electric technology platform, the Volvo EX90 is engineered to be the ideal companion for a more sustainable family lifestyle. It offers up to 600 kilometers of tailpipe emission-free driving range on a single charge, based on the WLTP test cycle, and achieves a 10 to 80 percent charge in approximately 30 minutes.

The initial twin-motor all-wheel drive variant is powered by a 111kWh battery and dual permanent magnet electric motors. In its performance configuration, it delivers 380 kW (517 hp) and 910 Nm of torque. Combined with a newly developed chassis, this powertrain provides a seamless and exhilarating driving experience.

The Volvo EX90 incorporates approximately 15 percent recycled steel and 25 percent recycled aluminum. It also utilizes 48 kilograms of recycled plastics and bio-based materials, constituting around 15 percent of the total plastic used in the car – the highest proportion in any Volvo vehicle to date, underscoring Volvo’s commitment to reducing environmental impact.

Finally, the Volvo EX90 is the first Volvo car equipped with all the necessary hardware to support bi-directional charging. This technology enables the car’s battery to serve as an external energy source, capable of powering homes, other electric devices, or even another electric Volvo car. Volvo plans to introduce bi-directional charging in the future, starting in select markets, further enhancing the vehicle’s utility and contribution to sustainable energy ecosystems.
