Like many crafters, I cherish handmade items, especially when they come from loved ones. My sister once sewed me a simple fabric key fob, and it became a treasured part of my keyring. Its handmade nature made it feel special and unique. However, after years of daily use, my beloved fabric key fob is starting to wear out. The fabric is fraying near the keyring, signaling it’s time for a replacement. Instead of just buying a new one, I decided to create a crochet key fob holder. This way, I could combine my love for crochet with a practical need, resulting in a durable and personalized accessory. My new crochet key fob holder is now ready on my keyring, waiting for the day my old faithful finally gives way!

Materials You Will Need:
- Medium Weight Yarn: You can use any medium weight yarn in your favorite colors. I used a color mix of Comfy Worsted and Shine Worsted by Knit Picks, both are cotton blends, which provide a lovely texture and durability. Cotton or cotton blend yarns are great choices for key fobs as they are sturdy and hold up well to daily use.
- G Hook (4.0-4.25mm): A G hook is recommended, but you can adjust the hook size depending on your yarn and tension. The goal is to create a fairly tight stitch to ensure your key fob holder is durable.
- Metal Key Hooks: Choose sturdy metal key hooks that will securely hold your keys. You can find these at most craft stores or online.
Gauge: Gauge is not crucial for this project, but aim for relatively tight stitches for the best results. This will create a denser fabric that will hold its shape and withstand wear and tear.

Crochet Key Fob Holder Tutorial:
Step 1:
Ch 40. Slip the end of your chain through the bottom of the key ring. Sl st into the first ch, forming a loop. Be careful not to twist the chain. (Photo 1)
Step 2:
- Ch 1. Hdc in the same stitch. Hdc in each of the next 39 ch. Join with sl st. (40 sts) (Photo 2)
- Ch 1. Sc in the same stitch. Sc in each of the next 39 sts. Join with sl st. (40 sts)
- Ch 1. Sc in the same stitch. Sc in each of the next 39 sts. Join with sl st. (40 sts).
If your first color is intended to be the accent color and bottom layer, do not break the yarn at this point.
Step 3:
Using your second color, ch 40. Pull the end through the key ring and join with the first ch, forming a loop. (Photo 3)
Step 4:
Repeat rows 1-3 with your second color. You will now have two layers of crochet on your key ring. (Photo 4)
Step 5:
Position the two layers so that the right sides are facing outward and carefully line them up. Then, taking the loop from your first layer, pull it through the 2nd layer and slip stitch them together along the side edge, working through both layers to join them securely. (Photo 5)
Step 6:
Tie off and weave in the yarn ends to neaten your work. Using the same color yarn as the edge you just created, slip stitch around the bottom edge of the key fob holder for a finished look. For ease, you can stuff most of the loose ends in between the layers before slip stitching around the edge to avoid weaving in all ends individually. (Photo 6) (Photo 7)
Step 7:
To finish your crochet key fob holder and secure the layers further, use two strands of yarn on your darning needle and sew a horizontal line just below the key ring, stitching through both layers and securing it firmly at the end. (Photo 8)
Color Variations and Creative Ideas
Experimenting with colors is one of the joys of crochet! I found that a navy blue key fob holder with two shades of pink accents is particularly charming. Using a complementary color for the outside stitching really makes the colors pop and adds a unique touch.
For another variation, I added a simple star design to an orange key fob holder using embroidery. If you decide to add embroidery or embellishments, remember to do so before slip stitching the two layers together. This makes it easier to work on a flat surface.
Perfect for Gifts and Craft Fairs
These cute crochet key ring holders are fantastic for craft fairs. A set of these in various colors would be an eye-catching and practical item for sale. They are also wonderful for small, thoughtful gifts. Consider making them as stocking stuffers, party favors, or little presents for friends and family. Their handmade charm is sure to be appreciated!
This year, I realized I was missing a small, best-selling item at my craft fair booth. I believe these crochet key fob holders will be the perfect addition for next year! They are quick to make, use minimal yarn, and appeal to a wide audience.
Happy crocheting!
