How Do You Change a Key Fob Battery? A Simple Guide

Ever found yourself locked out because your key fob suddenly stopped working? It’s a common inconvenience, and often, the culprit is just a dead battery. The good news is, changing a key fob battery is a straightforward task you can easily handle yourself. This guide will walk you through the process, step-by-step, so you can get your key fob back in action in no time.

First, you’ll need to gather a couple of simple tools: typically a small flathead screwdriver and a new battery. The type of battery varies depending on your car’s make and model, but common types include CR2032, CR2025, or CR1632. Check your owner’s manual or the old battery for the correct type before you start.

The first step is to open up your key fob. Many key fobs have a physical key hidden within them. Look for a release button or latch on your fob. Press or slide this button to detach the mechanical key. Removing this key often reveals a small slot or notch that you’ll use to pry the fob open.

Once the key is removed, take your small flathead screwdriver (or a similar thin, sturdy tool). Carefully insert the tip of the screwdriver into the slot you found after removing the key. Gently twist or pry to separate the two halves of the key fob casing. Be patient and work your way around the seam if needed, as some fobs can be a bit tight, especially the first time you open them.

With the key fob open, you’ll now see the battery. Pay close attention to how the old battery is positioned before you remove it. Note the positive (+) and negative (-) sides. Typically, you can gently pry the old battery out with your fingertip or the edge of the screwdriver.

Now, take your new battery and install it in the same orientation as the old one. Ensure the positive and negative sides are facing the correct way. Push the new battery firmly into place.

Finally, align the two halves of the key fob casing back together. Press them firmly until they snap securely back into place. You should hear a click, indicating that the fob is properly closed. Reinsert the mechanical key if you removed it. Test your key fob by pressing the lock or unlock buttons to ensure it’s working correctly.

Changing your key fob battery is a simple maintenance task that can save you time and hassle. By following these steps, you can easily replace your key fob battery and get back on the road with a working remote.
