How to Replace Battery on Subaru Key Fob

Maintaining your Subaru key fob is crucial for seamless vehicle access and operation. A common issue every Subaru owner will eventually face is a dead key fob battery. Fortunately, replacing it is a straightforward process you can easily do yourself. This guide will walk you through how to replace the battery in your Subaru key fob, ensuring you’re never caught off guard by a non-responsive remote.

Before you start, it’s important to know that most Subaru key fobs use a CR2032 type battery. You can usually confirm this by checking the back of your key fob for markings or consulting your Subaru owner’s manual. Having the correct replacement battery beforehand will make the process quicker and smoother.

To replace your Subaru key fob battery, you’ll typically need a few simple tools: a small Phillips head screwdriver or a flathead screwdriver, depending on your fob model, and your new CR2032 battery. Some models might not even require a screwdriver, allowing for a simple split-and-pry method.

Let’s get started with the battery replacement process. First, locate the small notch or seam on your key fob. This is usually along the side edge of the fob. Using your fingernail or a small flathead screwdriver, gently pry open the fob casing. Work your way around the seam until the case splits into two halves. Be careful not to apply excessive force to avoid damaging the plastic.

Once opened, you’ll see the circuit board and the battery. The battery is usually held in place by small clips. Observe the orientation of the old battery (+ side up or down) before removing it. Use your fingertip or a small tool to gently pop the old battery out of its housing.

Now, take your new CR2032 battery and insert it into the battery compartment, ensuring the polarity (+ and – sides) matches the orientation of the battery you just removed. It should snap into place securely.

With the new battery in place, carefully align the two halves of the key fob casing and press them firmly back together until they snap shut. Ensure there are no gaps and the case is securely closed.

Finally, test your key fob by pressing the lock, unlock, and panic buttons to ensure it’s functioning correctly. If the car responds as expected, you’ve successfully replaced your Subaru key fob battery!

To prolong the life of your Subaru key fob battery, avoid habits that may drain it quickly. Excessively pressing buttons when out of range of your vehicle, or storing your key fob too close to your Subaru when at home, can lead to unnecessary battery drain. Consider using the touch-sensitive door lock features on your Subaru if available, and store your fob further away from your vehicle when not in use. Regularly checking your key fob battery and replacing it proactively can prevent unexpected lockouts and keep you on the road with peace of mind.
