It’s a common inconvenience: your GMC key fob stops working. Before you panic, the most likely culprit is a dead battery. Thankfully, replacing the battery in your GMC key fob is a straightforward process you can easily handle yourself. Most GMC key fobs are powered by a 3-volt CR2032 battery, designed to last for several years. When the time comes for a replacement, you won’t need to visit a mechanic. With just a simple flathead screwdriver and a new battery, you can get your key fob working again in minutes. CR2032 batteries are widely available at department stores, hardware stores, and battery retailers, often sold in convenient multi-packs.
To begin, you’ll need to access the battery compartment within your GMC key fob. Carefully use a flathead screwdriver to pry open the back panel of the fob. Gently insert the screwdriver into the small slot on the side of the key fob and twist lightly. The panel should pop open with minimal effort. Avoid forcing it, as this could damage the casing.
Once the key fob is open, you’ll see the battery. Take a moment to observe the orientation of the old battery before removing it. Note whether the positive (+) side is facing up or down. In most GMC key fobs, the positive side faces towards the back panel. Carefully remove the old battery. You may be able to gently pry it out with the flathead screwdriver if needed.
Now, take your new CR2032 battery and install it in the same orientation as the old one. Ensure the positive (+) side is positioned correctly. Once the new battery is securely in place, align the two halves of the key fob casing and press them firmly together until they snap back into place. You should hear a click indicating that the fob is properly closed.
In most cases, replacing the battery will restore your GMC key fob to full working order. However, if your key fob still doesn’t function after a battery replacement, there might be a different issue. This could involve a problem with the key fob itself or your vehicle’s electronic system. If you suspect a more complex issue, don’t hesitate to contact our dealership to schedule an appointment. Our certified technicians can diagnose the problem and ensure your GMC key fob and vehicle are working perfectly.
