Losing a key fob or needing to program a new one for an additional driver doesn’t always require a trip to the dealership. For Ford vehicles equipped with push button start, you can often reprogram your key fob yourself at home. This guide will walk you through the steps to reprogram your Ford key fob, getting you back on the road with minimal hassle. To begin, ensure you have two previously programmed intelligent access keys readily available inside your vehicle, along with your new, unprogrammed key fob.
Here’s a step-by-step process to reprogram your Ford key fob for push button start models:
-
Vehicle Preparation: Start by turning off your Ford completely. Make sure all doors are fully closed and remain closed throughout the entire procedure. Gather your two existing, programmed intelligent access keys and the new key fob you wish to program. Keep the new key within easy reach.
-
Locate the Backup Slot: Open your center console and remove the tray and the cover to reveal the backup slot. This slot is designed to hold the key fob during the reprogramming process.
-
Insert First Programmed Key: Take one of your previously programmed intelligent access keys and place it into the backup slot. Ensure the buttons on the key fob are facing upwards.
-
Press the Ignition Button (First Time): Once the first key is in place, press the push button ignition switch.
-
Press the Ignition Button Again (Second Time): Wait for approximately five seconds, and then press the push button ignition switch a second time.
-
Remove the First Key: Take the first programmed intelligent access key out of the backup slot.
-
Insert Second Programmed Key: Within ten seconds of removing the first key, insert your second programmed intelligent access key into the backup slot. Then, press the push button ignition switch.
-
Press the Ignition Button Again (Third Time): Wait for another five seconds and press the push button ignition switch again.
-
Insert New Key Fob: Remove the second programmed key from the backup slot. After waiting for five seconds, place the new, unprogrammed intelligent access key into the backup slot. Press the push button ignition switch one last time. At this point, the programming should be complete.
To confirm successful programming, test the remote control functions on your new key fob and attempt to start your Ford vehicle using the newly programmed key. If the programming was unsuccessful, wait for ten seconds and carefully repeat steps 1 through 9. Ensure that you perform each step within 30 seconds of the preceding step. If you make a mistake or exceed the time limit, wait for at least one minute before starting the procedure again from the beginning.
