DIY Tutorial: Kate Spade Inspired Key Fob

This step-by-step guide will walk you through creating your own chic Kate Spade key fob. Get ready to unleash your inner designer!

Materials You’ll Need (per key fob):

  • Fabric – 3″ x 10″ (Choose a fabric that reflects the Kate Spade aesthetic – think bold prints or classic colors)
  • Fusible Fleece – 2″ x 10″ (Adds structure and a plush feel to your key fob)
  • Gold Bias Tape (For that signature Kate Spade gold accent)
  • Thread to match fabric
  • Needle (For hand-sewing the bow)
  • One 1.25″ Key Fob Clamp and Ring (Available online at places like Etsy or craft stores)
  • Pliers (For securely closing the key fob clamp)
  • Sewing Machine & Iron

Step 1: Prepare Your Fabric

Begin by fusing the fleece to the wrong side of your chosen fabric. Center the fusible fleece strip in the middle of your fabric piece and iron it on, following the fleece manufacturer’s instructions. This will give your fabric key fob a nice, sturdy feel.

Step 2: Fold and Press the Sides

Next, fold in each of the long sides of your fabric strip by 3/8″ towards the fleece side. Press these folds firmly in place with your iron. This creates clean, finished edges for your handmade key fob.

Step 3: Fold in Half and Press Again

Now, fold the fabric strip in half lengthwise, bringing the long folded edges together. Press this fold to create a crisp center crease. Your DIY key fob is now taking shape!

Step 4: Create the Gold Bow

Fashion a small, chic bow approximately 1″ wide from your gold bias tape. Hand-sew the bow together to secure its shape. This gold bow is a key element in achieving that Kate Spade inspired key fob look.

Step 5: Attach the Bow and Bias Tape

Cut a piece of gold bias tape about 4″ long. Measure down 1 1/2″ from one end of your fabric strip and position the bias tape strip so its ends will be tucked into the open fabric edge. The tape should wrap around the fabric strip. Sew the gold bow securely in place on top of the bias tape.

Step 6: Sew the Edges Closed

With the bias tape ends tucked neatly inside the fabric edges, pin the opening closed. Sew along the long edge of the fabric strip, closing the opening as you go. Turn the fabric piece over and sew along the other folded edge as well, ensuring both long sides are securely stitched. Be careful to move the bow out of the way as you sew, so it doesn’t get stitched down.

Step 7: Attach the Key Fob Clamp

Fold your fabric strip in half, bringing the two short, raw ends together. Tuck these raw ends into the key fob clamp.

Step 8: Secure the Clamp

Using your pliers, firmly close the key fob clamp, securing the fabric inside. If you’re using regular flat nose pliers, protect the hardware from scratches by wrapping the plier tips with a soft cloth or felt.

Step 9: Admire Your Stylish Key Fob!

Congratulations! You’ve just created a super cute floral Bow Key Fob, perfectly channeling that Kate Spade key fob aesthetic.

These DIY Kate Spade key fobs are wonderfully addictive to make. Once you start, you’ll want to create a whole collection! Experiment with different fabrics, colors, and bow styles to personalize your key fobs even further.
