Looking for a quick, easy, and thoughtful gift idea? Or perhaps you want to add a touch of personal style and security to your own key fobs? Look no further! Wristlet key chains for key fobs are the perfect solution. These handy accessories are not only incredibly useful but also a fun and simple sewing project, even for beginners. Just like the assistant principal at my daughter’s school who hinted about needing a replacement for her worn-out wrist lanyard, everyone appreciates a practical and stylish key chain.
This tutorial will guide you through creating your own durable and fashionable key chain for your key fob. It’s a fantastic way to use up fabric scraps and create personalized gifts that people will genuinely love and use every day.
Why Choose a Key Chain for Your Key Fob?
Before we dive into the tutorial, let’s understand why a key chain is an essential accessory for your key fob:
- Enhanced Security: A key chain, especially a wristlet style, keeps your keys securely attached to you. No more fumbling in your bag or pockets, or worse, accidentally dropping and losing your valuable key fob.
- Stylish Accessory: Key chains are no longer just functional items; they are fashion statements! With a wide variety of fabrics and designs, you can create key chains that match your personal style and even coordinate with your outfits.
- Easy Identification: A colorful and unique key chain makes your keys instantly recognizable, especially when you have multiple sets of keys or when sharing keys within a household.
- Convenience and Accessibility: Keep your keys readily accessible. A wristlet key chain allows you to keep your keys on your wrist while your hands are full, making errands and daily tasks much easier.
- Perfect Personalized Gifts: Handmade key chains are thoughtful and personal gifts. They show you care and are a much more unique and appreciated present than store-bought trinkets.
Materials You’ll Need to Sew Your Key Chain for Key Fob
This project is scrap-friendly and requires minimal materials. For each key chain, gather the following:
- Fabric Strips:
- One strip of fabric measuring 2’’ x 14’’ for the outer layer. Choose a fabric that reflects your style or the recipient’s taste.
- One strip of fabric measuring 2’’ x 14’’ for the inner layer. This can be a coordinating fabric or a durable lining material.
- One fabric rectangle measuring 3’’ x 3 1/2’’ for the wrap-around tab. This piece will secure the hardware.
- Interfacing: One strip of light to medium weight fusible interfacing, 3 1/2’’ x 14’’. Decor-Bond 809 from Pellon is recommended for its durability and stability. Leftover interfacing from other projects will also work.
- Swivel Snap Clip: A 1’’ swivel snap clip or alligator clasp. These can be found at craft stores like Joanns or Hobby Lobby, but for a wider selection and better value, consider Amazon.
- Thread: Coordinating polyester thread to match your chosen fabrics.
- Needle: A heavy-duty sewing machine needle, size 90/14 or 100/16. Superior Topstitch Needles are a great option for durability and professional finish.
- Tools: Iron, ironing board, sewing machine, scissors or rotary cutter, ruler, clips or pins.

Sewing Your DIY Key Chain for Key Fob: Step-by-Step Tutorial
Follow these simple steps to create your own stylish and secure key chain for your key fob:
1. Cutting the Fabric and Interfacing
- Accurately cut all fabric and interfacing pieces according to the measurements listed in the materials section. Precise cutting ensures a neat and professional-looking key chain.
2. Sewing the Fabric Strips
- Place the two 2’’ x 14’’ fabric strips right sides together.
- Sew along one long edge using a 1/4’’ seam allowance. This creates a tube that will form the main strap of your key chain.

3. Pressing and Applying Interfacing
- Press the Seam Open: Carefully press the seam you just sewed open. This reduces bulk and creates a flatter strap.
- Fold and Press in Half: Fold the strap in half lengthwise, with the wrong sides together, and press along the fold. This helps create a crisp edge for your key chain.
- Fuse Interfacing: Open the fabric strap and place the fusible side of the interfacing strip against the wrong side of one side of the fabric (it doesn’t matter which). Press with a hot iron to fuse the interfacing to the fabric. Ensure the interfacing is securely bonded for added structure and durability.
- Fold Long Edges: Fold each long raw edge of the fabric strip towards the center, overlapping the edges to meet in the middle over the interfacing. Press these folds in place. You should be folding approximately 3/4″ on each side.
- Fold in Half Again: Fold the entire strip in half again along the original center fold line, encasing the raw edges and interfacing inside. Press firmly to create a clean, finished strap.

4. Preparing the Wrap-Around Tab
- Fold and Press Tab Edges: Take the 3 1/2’’ side of the 3’’ x 3 1/2’’ fabric rectangle and fold it over to the wrong side by about 1’’. Press flat.
- Second Fold: Fold the opposite 3 1/2’’ side over so that the raw edge is approximately 1/8’’ away from the first folded edge. Press. This double-fold creates a clean, finished edge for the visible part of the tab.

5. Topstitching and Finishing
- Topstitch the Strap: Set your sewing machine to a longer stitch length (3-4mm) for topstitching. You can also use a triple stitch for a bolder look, as demonstrated in the original article. Topstitch along both long edges of the 1’’ x 14’’ strap, approximately 1/8’’ from the edge. This secures the layers and adds a professional finish.
- Attach Swivel Snap Clip: Switch to a wide zig-zag stitch on your sewing machine, as wide as possible. Slide the swivel snap clip onto the fabric strap. Butt the two ends of the strap together, ensuring they are aligned. Place the ends under the sewing machine foot and zig-zag stitch back and forth several times to securely join the strap ends.
- Position and Attach Wrap-Around Tab: Slide the zig-zagged seam towards the swivel snap clip until it is approximately 1 1/2’’ away from the clasp. Center the wrap-around tab over the zig-zagged seam with the raw edge of the tab facing the key chain strap. Fold the pre-pressed edges of the tab around the strap, tucking the short raw ends of the tab neatly inside. Clip or pin the tab in place, ensuring it is snug and secure.
- Topstitch the Tab: Sew two short lines of topstitching to attach the tab to the strap. Align these lines with the existing topstitching on the strap and backstitch at the beginning and end of each line for security. You can sew a square around the tab for extra reinforcement and a decorative look, but straight lines are simpler and just as effective.

Tips for Customization and Style
- Fabric Choices: Experiment with different fabrics! Quilting cottons, canvas, denim, or even faux leather can create unique looks. Consider using patterned fabrics, solid colors, or combining contrasting fabrics for the inner and outer layers.
- Thread Color: Use contrasting thread for topstitching to make it a design feature, or choose coordinating thread for a subtle look. Metallic threads can add a touch of glamour.
- Embellishments: Add small embellishments like rivets, beads, or charms to personalize your key chains further. You can also embroider initials or small designs onto the fabric before sewing.
- Hardware Finishes: Swivel snap clips come in various finishes like silver, gold, bronze, and black. Choose a finish that complements your fabric choices and overall style.
- Vary the Width: While this tutorial uses a 1’’ wide strap, you can adjust the fabric strip measurements to create narrower or wider key chains depending on your preference.
Now you have a beautiful, handmade key chain for your key fob! These are not only practical for keeping your keys secure and accessible but also a stylish accessory and a perfect handmade gift. Sew a batch of these key chains in different fabrics and colors to have on hand for last-minute gifts or to sell at craft fairs.
