For many car owners, especially in regions with harsh winters or hot summers, the convenience of a remote start system is undeniable. While some modern vehicles offer app-based remote start functionalities, the traditional key fob remote start system often presents a more reliable and user-friendly experience.
Initially, app-based remote start seemed like a futuristic and convenient solution. The idea of starting your car from your smartphone appeared seamless. However, in practice, the reality can be somewhat different. The primary drawback I encountered was the delay. Waiting for the app to connect and initiate the start sequence could take upwards of 15 seconds each time. This delay, though seemingly short, can become frustrating when you’re in a hurry or simply want a quick start. Furthermore, many app-based systems operate on a subscription model, adding an ongoing cost to the convenience. While I initially subscribed, hoping to utilize the feature frequently, the slow start times led me to reconsider its value, and I ultimately let the subscription lapse.
Seeking a more immediate and dependable solution, I opted for a dealership-installed remote start system that utilizes a key fob. This upgrade, while it does involve physical key fobs, provides a significantly faster start time. The installation process at the dealership typically involves adding a receiver for the key fob signals. In my vehicle, this required accessing a wiring harness near the rear liftgate, which meant the technician needed to carefully work around the headliner. While the process itself is straightforward for experienced technicians, the labor time can still be around three hours, regardless of the actual time taken. The benefit, however, is the near-instantaneous start provided by the key fob.
For those living in colder climates, like Michigan or New England, I would also strongly recommend considering a heated steering wheel in conjunction with a remote start system. The combination of a warm car and a heated steering wheel on a frigid morning significantly enhances comfort.
If you’re on the fence about which remote start option to choose, especially when purchasing a new vehicle, my advice would be to initially try the app-based system if it’s available. Give it a month or two to see if it meets your needs and tolerance for delay. If, like me, you find the speed lacking, know that adding a dealership-installed key fob remote start system later is usually an option, often at a comparable price to having it installed at the time of vehicle purchase. Ultimately, for speed and reliability, a key fob remote start offers a superior experience.
