As a Porsche owner, you understand the importance of maintaining your vehicle’s pristine condition, and that extends to the often-used but easily overlooked key fob. Like many, I sought out a protective cover to prevent scratches and wear on my Porsche key fobs. My journey led me through a few different types, and I’m sharing my experiences focusing solely on protective key fob covers, leaving aside discussions about colored side replacements.
Years ago, I started with leather covers for my Porsche keys. For my Macan, I chose a brown leather cover, and for my 911, a black one.
These leather covers, similar to the stock photo shown, definitely served their primary purpose: protection. They were effective at preventing scratches and keeping the button icons from wearing off. The leather added a touch of class and a comfortable feel in hand. The covers were also designed for quick removal, easily unclipping from my main keyring, which was convenient.
However, there were downsides. The leather covers added noticeable bulk to the key fob, making it feel larger in my pocket. More concerning was the issue with the screw rod that held the cover together. It frequently loosened and, if not regularly tightened, would cause the cover to detach from the keyring unexpectedly – a potential security risk.
While the brown leather cover for my Macan is still in use and holding up reasonably well, the black leather cover for my 911 had durability issues. After a few years, the black cover split near a seam, rendering it unusable.
Seeking a more durable and perhaps stylish replacement for the failed black leather cover, I opted for an alloy and leather case.
This “Alloy+Leather Remote Key Case Fob Cover Holder For Porsche” looked very attractive initially. The combination of materials gave it a premium feel. Installation, however, was not intuitive as no directions were included. Through contacting the seller, I learned that the included plastic tool was for sliding the side locking tab to open and close the case.
Despite its aesthetic appeal, this alloy and leather case also had its share of problems. The small circular car picture emblem on the clip soon detached, requiring me to glue it back on – a sign of less-than-ideal build quality. More significantly, the entire case began falling off recently. Upon inspection, there was no visible damage, and I reassembled it, only for it to fall off again the next day. It seems the side locking tab, intended to secure the case, would inadvertently open when rubbing against other keys or inside my pocket, a major flaw in daily use. This necessitated finding yet another solution.
My latest attempt at Porsche key fob protection led me to a silicone cover.
I chose the “X AUTOHAUX Black Silicone Keyless Entry Car Remote Key Fob Case Cover Protector for Porsche,” a much more budget-friendly option. The product description can be slightly confusing, mentioning transferring internal components, which is inaccurate. This silicone cover is designed to simply slip over your existing key fob.
The silicone cover provides a snug fit, requiring a bit of wiggling to get it on completely. The top opening can initially fold over during installation, but it’s easily corrected with a plastic tool, like a letter opener, ensuring no damage to the silicone.
Cleverly designed, the silicone cover includes two precisely placed holes: one to showcase the Porsche logo and another to allow the red activation light to be visible. This thoughtful design maintains the Porsche identity while offering protection. Compared to the bulkier leather and alloy cases, the silicone cover is significantly slimmer and adds minimal size to the key fob.
It’s worth noting that this silicone cover, like the others, doesn’t come with a keyring or clip. You’ll need to use your own to attach it to your keys or a quick-release clip if desired. I personally prefer a carabiner-style clip for easy detachment.
For those looking for a practical, slim, and effective Porsche Key Fob Cover, especially compared to bulkier leather or potentially unreliable alloy options, a silicone cover like this appears to be a strong contender. You can find similar options online, such as on Amazon.com.
