C6 Corvette Key Fob Programming: A Step-by-Step Guide

Losing or needing to replace your C6 Corvette key fob can be a hassle, but programming a new one yourself can save you time and money. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step procedure to program your C6 Corvette key fobs, ensuring you can get back on the road quickly.

Step-by-Step Programming Procedure for Your C6 Corvette Key Fob

Before you begin, it’s crucial to understand that there are two methods for programming key fobs: one for adding fobs while keeping existing ones, and another for programming all fobs, which is what we’ll focus on here to ensure a clean programming process. This method will erase all previously programmed fobs, so be sure to have all the fobs you want to use ready to program.

Here’s how to program your C6 Corvette key fob:

  1. Prepare Your Vehicle: Begin by rolling down the driver’s side window and ensuring the car is completely turned off. Open both the trunk and the glove box.
  2. Isolate Key Fobs: Make absolutely sure that no key fobs are inside or near the vehicle. This is a critical step to prevent interference during the programming process.
  3. Trunk Key Activation: Insert your key into the trunk keyhole. Turn the key five times in rapid succession, ensuring you complete the turns in less than 5 seconds.
  4. DIC Activation: After turning the key, the Driver Information Center (DIC) will beep and illuminate, displaying the message “Off/Acc to learn”. If you decide to cancel the programming at this point, simply press the top half of the Start button to return the car to its normal state. Otherwise, proceed to the next step to erase previous fobs and program new ones.
  5. Initiate 10-Minute Programming Cycle: Press the bottom half of the Start button. The DIC will indicate that you need to wait 10 minutes and will begin a countdown. You can close the trunk and car door while you wait for each 10-minute cycle to complete.
  6. Repeat Cycle (Second Time): After the first 10-minute countdown, the DIC will again show “Off/Acc to learn”. Press the bottom half of the Start button once more. The DIC will start a second 10-minute countdown.
  7. Repeat Cycle (Third Time): Following the second 10-minute countdown, “Off/Acc to learn” will reappear on the DIC. Press the bottom half of the Start button again to initiate the final 10-minute countdown.
  8. Fob Programming Mode: Once the third 10-minute period concludes, the DIC will display “Ready for Fob #1”. At this stage, the system is ready to learn new key fobs.
  9. Program Fob #1: Take your first key fob and insert it into the glove box slot. Ensure the buttons are facing towards the passenger side and the keyring end is pointing outwards.
  10. Program Subsequent Fobs: After approximately 3 to 4 seconds, the DIC will beep and indicate “Ready for Fob #2”. If you have additional fobs, place the next fob into the glovebox slot. You can program up to a maximum of four fobs.
  11. End Programming Session: When you have programmed all your desired fobs, press the bottom half of the Start button to exit the programming session.
  12. Test Key Fobs: Thoroughly test all the buttons on each fob to confirm they are working correctly. Afterward, move all fobs away from the car and test each one individually to start the vehicle, ensuring successful programming.

Important Considerations and Warnings

  • Regional Variations: Be aware that programming procedures can vary by region. Canadian spec cars may only support the short programming procedure at home and require a dealer for the long procedure. European spec cars typically require all fob programming to be done exclusively by a dealer.
  • Battery Maintenance: This programming process can be lengthy and draw significant power. It is advisable to connect a battery tender to your C6 Corvette during programming to prevent battery discharge, which could lead to programming failure or prevent the car from starting.
  • Potential Interference: It has been reported that having a cell phone on your person during the long programming method may cause interference and disrupt the process, particularly around step #9. It’s recommended to keep cell phones away from the vehicle during programming.

By following these steps carefully, you can successfully program your C6 Corvette key fobs yourself. Always double-check your work and ensure all fobs are functioning correctly after programming. If you encounter issues, consulting your local Chevrolet dealer or a certified mechanic is recommended.
