- Dealer Flexibility: Despite what some dealerships might imply, they are technically capable of programming customer-supplied or used key fobs. Dealership policies may vary, but the VIDA system itself places no restrictions on using compatible keys, regardless of their origin.
- Frequency Variations: Volvo key fobs operate on different frequencies depending on the region. In North America, the standard frequency is 434MHz. Other regions might use 315MHz or a “narrow band” 434MHz version, like in South Korea. While this guide primarily focuses on the 434MHz keys common in North America, the general principles apply across frequencies.
- Key Variations, Not Part Numbers: Instead of getting bogged down in a confusing array of Volvo part numbers, we’ll focus on the functional variations of key fobs. This approach is more practical, especially when considering the use of recycled or aftermarket keys.

These MS keys are designed to deactivate when motionless for a period, preventing thieves from amplifying the key’s signal to unlock and steal the car. Volvo even offers an upgrade kit for older models to switch to these enhanced security keys, though it involves a complete new set and comes at a premium.
Identifying motion-sensing keys is straightforward. The non-MS key from manufacturer Huf bears the model number HUF8423, while the motion-sensing version is HUF8423MS. Similarly, the FCC IDs are YGOHUF8423 for non-MS and YGOHUF8423MS for MS keys. These identifiers, along with other regulatory numbers, are usually printed inside the key fob, beneath where the emergency key blade sits. On the sport key tag versions, the markings are on the back. Sport key tag model numbers follow a similar pattern: HUF8432/HUF8432MS and FCCIDs YGOHUF8432/YGOHUF8432MS (again, these are for 434MHz versions).
The great news is that these motion-sensing and non-motion-sensing keys are fully interchangeable. The motion-sensing functionality is self-contained within the key fob itself, so you can upgrade to an MS key without any car modifications.

One minor style detail: some plastic shells have black buttons. Swapping a shell onto a “silver button” key fob will change the button color, purely an aesthetic change without affecting functionality.
The sport key tag is fairly simple. While Volvo doesn’t officially endorse battery replacement, it is technically possible. Used sport key tags can be a gamble due to battery life.
